Chapter 56

Chapter 56:

-Jack’s point of view-

I yawned and stretched my arms accidently brushing Hanley’s hair. I looked over at her, she was still asleep. I smiled to myself, thankful that Hanley was with me now, like a proper family. I lay quietly for a moment and continued smiling. My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of Max’s feet running out of bed and towards the room. I jumped out of bed and ran for the door before he burst in.

‘Max’ I shouted quietly and swept him up in my arms before he could run through the door. ‘Uncle Jack’ he giggled.  ‘Mummy’s still asleep, so how about you and I go out for a bit eh?’ I smiled and Max nodded excitedly. ‘Alright, go get dressed then’ I let him back on the floor and he ran off to his room. I crept back into my room and quietly got changed, Hanley was still asleep. I finished getting dressed and before leaving kissed her gently on her forehead, she wriggled slightly and smiled.

I walked out the room closing the door behind me to see max all ready to go. ‘Ok, let’s go!’ I smiled heading for the door, max followed behind. ‘Where are we going?’ max spoke with excitement. ‘Well, wherever you want! But first I need to go seem my mum ok?’ I said climbing into the car. ‘Ok’ max smiled fastening his seatbelt.

Moment’s later we arrived at my mum’s house. I knocked on the door and max stood by my side, holding my hand. The door opened ‘jack!’ my mum smiled at me. ‘Hey mum’ i smiled back and gave her a hug. She let us through the door. ‘Max, why don’t you go watch some TV whilst I talk for a bit?’ I smiled. ‘ok’ Max smiled back and ran for the remote whilst me and my mum made our way to the kitchen.

‘So, what’s up?’ She said sitting at the table. ‘Well, I have some pretty big news’ I smiled at her as she waited for me to continue. ‘It’s turns out, I’m max’s father.’ She gasped and brought her hands to her mouth, but you could still see her grinning. ‘Oh that’s wonderful; I’ve always wanted a grandchild before…’ she paused. ‘Before what?’ she suddenly didn’t look so happy. ‘Well jack, I have some news to tell you myself’ ‘Yes?’ by the tone of her voice it didn’t sound like good news. ‘The other day, I went for a check up at the doctors…’ I suddenly felt my heart drop to my stomach. ‘And?’ I dared to ask. ‘I’ve been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer’ she whispered and a tear rolled down her face. ‘Wh-what?’ I stuttered and rubbed my tear-filled eyes. ‘They said I haven’t got much longer, but they can’t be sure. So, tomorrow I’m moving into a hospice where they’ll take care of me’

‘What!?’ I repeated. ‘You can’t move into a hospice mum, I’ll take care of you!’ I exclaimed not believing what I was hearing. ‘Jack calm down, you have a kid now and Hanley to take care of, I’ll be fine honestly’ she said with a calming voice. ‘But’ I choked on my tears. ‘Don’t worry about me please, just take care of yourself, and your family’ she smiled and placed her hand on mine.

I tried to catch my breath. ‘Ok, I see your point, but I’ll come visit you I promise’ I smiled at her trying to stop myself from bursting into tears. ‘Good, now jack I must ask you something’ I nodded. ‘This is your life now, you, max and Hanley. Please take care of it, don’t ruin things for yourself, don’t let it go’ I smiled and paused for a minute. ‘I know, I won’t ever let them go. I love them both too much. I mean, Hanley, I think, I love her mum’ She smiled at me and reached for something in her pocket. Something small. She placed the object in my hand and I felt something hard and round. ‘For when the time is right’ she said still smiling. I opened up my hand to see a ring.

‘Your father gave that to me, I was hoping I could pass it on one day’ still smiling I carefully put the ring in my pocket. ‘Thanks’ I croaked as tears began to blur my sight. ‘I better go, I promised max I’d take him out somewhere’ I said standing up, she nodded and smiled. ‘C’mon Max!’ I shouted and he came running out of the living room. ‘Bye mum’ I hugged her, hoping to see her again soon. ‘Bye jack, bye max’ she waved to us as we drove off.
