Chapter 44:

‘What do you mean he’s gone?!’ Alex said rushing up to me. I tried to calm myself down so I could make sense, but I couldn’t. Alex looked at me frustrated and ran past me and down the stairs.

I gasped for breath and heard Alex running back up ‘I’m going to look for him, stay here okay?’ I nodded with tears streaming down my face and watched as Alex scurried down the stairs and slammed the front door shut.

I slowly walked down the stairs gripping the banister for balance, I felt as though I could faint any second now. I made my way to the couch to pull out my phone and ring Jack, if max hadn’t been kidnapped, my stomach retched at the thought, then he’d be with him.

I wiped my eyes as the phone rang, eventually Jack answered. ‘Max is missing!’ I screamed out before he could say anything. ‘What!?’ he shouted. ‘He’s missing, I don’t know where he is and Alex has gone to find him! Is he not with you?’ ‘No!?’ I heard the panic in his voice. ‘I’ll go out and help, just stay calm okay? Everything will be fine!’ Jack said sounding hopeful. ‘Okay’ I breathed. ‘Okay’ I hung the phone up and continued to cry on the couch.

------Rian’s point of view------

‘I hope Alex and Hanley are okay’ I looked at Zack. He smirked slightly. ‘Yeah, me too’ ‘Do you think it was rude of us to leave like that?’ I said looking back wondering. ‘Nah, they wouldn’t want us there whilst they were arguing’ Zack said sounding pleased.

‘I guess, what are you so happy about anyway?’ I said suspiciously. ‘Nothing, nothing’ he replied and wiped his smirk off his face. I looked dead ahead and saw a small child stood at the end of the street. ‘Hey, isn’t that max?’ I looked at Zack who was focusing on the child ahead. ‘I think so’ he looked at me and ran towards him.

‘Max?’ Zack shouted out. The child turned around to reveal his face, it was max. ‘Hey, what are you doing?’ I spoke but he didn’t reply. ‘I think you should go home, mummy and daddy are going to be worried sick!’ he looked up at me. ‘No, take me to Jack!’ I looked at Zack confused, he looked back at me.

‘What?’ I mouthed at Zack. ‘I don’t know’ he mouthed back looking as confused as me. ‘Urm, maybe we should let mummy decide about that?’ Zack walked off. ‘I’m gunna call Hanley’ he whispered. ‘Okay’ Max tugged on my pants. ‘Please take me to Uncle Jack!’ he began to cry.

‘Shit’ I whispered to myself. I wasn’t exactly experienced with kids and had no clue what to do. I peered over at Zack who was still on the phone yapping on. Max was still at my feet crying. I sighed not knowing what to do at all.

After a few more minute of max’s crying Zack finally came back over. ‘Hanley’s on her way’ I sighed in relief and looked down at max. ‘Mummy’s on her way now, and she’ll take you to Jack!’ He stopped crying almost instantly and smiled brightly.
