A week, that’s all the peace I got. A week later all chaos broke out in my mind.
I am just sitting quietly in the hut, tieing a new white ribbon around my Dragnatis Orb. I hang it around my neck when I finish and sigh contently. Raya is off playing somewhere, and everyone else is doing whatever little chores they have. I could go help Moa do laundry I guess.
I head to the door to go find something to do. It swing open quickly before I get to it. Mazin stands there with wild eyes.
“They are here.” He says and pulls me to him in a tight embrace.
“Wh—what?” I shake out. My whole body goes numb with shock. I can’t move, I can’t talk anymore. Nothing seems to register. All noises slur together and even Mazin pulling me back into the house goes by in a blur. He’s calling my name…but I can’t respond. He is saying something. What is he saying.
“FINA!” He shakes me out of my state of shock.
“Mazin what do I do?” I latch back onto him and the tears start to roll down my cheaks.
“Run. Run to the mountains and hide with Volcana.” He says and grabs my bag of belongings. “Go!” He starts pushing me towards the door. I don’t know how to respond. Volcana, she needs to stay put right now. She can’t come near the village. We are almost to the door when it swings open again. Aizor and Raya rush in franticly.
“I’m leaving.” I saw quietly, I know I look terrified, so do they.
“No time. They are already almost here. If you leave now they’ll see you. Here, here hide in here.” Aizor pushes me to the back wall of the hut. He pushes on one of the boards and it slides away. There is a gap behind it in the wall just big enough for me to hide. I go inside clutching my belongings, Raya hands me everything else. Before I can say another word they close it and I am enveloped in darkness. Darkness, silence, I’m alone with my things in this little hole in the wall. I never knew this was here, why haven’t they told me about it. I guess they are allowed to keep their secrets too, I did.
“Stay in here until we let you out. The people from the Red Nation are in the town.” Mazin whispers to me.
Oh gosh. They are here! They are in town! Who is it? Is Gahiji out there too? Who did they send? How close are they? Volcana stay put okay? Stay put! Okay. Good girl. I stay as quiet as possible and strain my ears to try and hear everything I can. I hear Raya quietly talking to Moa. I hear Aizor and Mazin clearing up the house. Outside the house I hear some shouts, doors opening, doors closing more doors more shouts. Footsteps on gravel. They are getting closer. I Hear the neighbors door open, shouts, orders being given. The door closes. Footsteps on gravel getting louder, closer.
They’re here.
The door opens. My heart feels like it’s about to explode, my ears pound with each heart beat. My hands tremble, my breath shaky even though I try so hard not be panicked. I have to stay calm, I have to stay calm. Stay calm!
“Can I help you?” Aizor asked as the loud footsteps enter the room. I hear two, three men.
“Yes. I am from the Red Nation. We are looking for a runaway, have you seen anyone like that? She is young, around 17 with fire red brown curly hair and amber orange eyes.” The voice… dear lord…it was my dad!
“No.” Aizor says forcefully. He’s lying? What? They know it’s me they are looking for. I knew they were going to do anything to protect me. Lying? That’s a lot for them.
