Chapter Six: Here’s that Feeling Again
“Come on, lets see something.” Zilindo says and pulls me towards the beach again.
“I—I don’t know.” I shake my hand and stop suddenly, he jerks back, his hand still latched onto mine.
“Why not?” He asks me with confusion in his eyes.
“I…” I don’t really have an answer. “I’m afraid to.” I give my excuse and look away.
“Don’t be.” He smiles and looks at me with his kind eyes, “You’re a natural at everything. Why would it be any different now?”
“It’s just…” I sigh, “I’ve only used my power a few times, and one of those times I hurt someone.” I look into his eyes searching for his understanding.
“Well,” He said and stood back, “I do not see anyone else around, and, I’ll give you plenty of room.” He offers a smile. Erg, why can’t I stay resolved on anything?
“Once, I’ll try something once.” I finally give in. A smile spreads across his face and he dances away happily. He’s such a strange boy. Oh boy what did I agree to do? I follow him to a part of the beach where there was still a bit of sand left. Sand doesn’t catch on fire, so, it is safe. I think. Probably right? Oh crud what am I doing. I look down at the ground and breath in deeply.
“Okay, so stand over there and I’ll hold up the book for you.” Zilindo says as he sits down on a washed up piece of drift wood.
“Fine.” I say with a pinched face. I stand away and wait for him to open the book. I wait while a smile spreads across his face and his eyes light up. What is he looking at? Dork, I’m waiting. I wait a little bit more, but all he does is start to chuckle, then start to laugh. Ok, enough.
“WHAT!” I yell and get his attention, he snaps back to attention with an amused look on his face.
“What?” I ask again.
“It’s just…” He smiles, “It’s still funny to see you as a Blondie.” He smiles and walks over to me, flipping a piece of my wavy hair out of my face.
“You’re fiery hair has been put out.” He smiles.
“Well…” I pause, not being able to finish. He’s right, I actually loved my reddish brown hair, in the sun it would shine like the radiant glow of fire. Now it’s just washed out blond.
“Sit down and hold up the book.” I say pushing him towards the log.
“Alright, alright!” He throws up his hands with a laugh. He picks up the book and opens to a page.
“This one, do this one.” He said pointing to the form. I lean in to look, it looks easy enough. I just stand with my feet parallel, parted a little, arms to my side bent at a 90 degree angle. Then I step forward, and punch my hands out, so…I step away from Zilindo and face the south. I part my feet and bend my arms, I take a deep breath and…fire! Literally, I shoot my hands out and fire erupts from them in a large hot, wide and far stream of fire. My hands tingle from the heat, I can feel it in my chest too. It’s not painful like my chest is on fire, but it tingles like…like…a hundred butterflies landing on my heart and flittering their wings. It feels nice. The fire that I am creating is so red, but also orange with little tinges of yellow lifting off every lick that tired to escape away from the main fire. It doesn’t look like the fire that Gahiji makes, that I’ve seen anywhere actually. It looks different to me, I don’t know why. Fire is fire isn’t it? Why does mine feel different. Maybe it is because, it is mine. I created it by myself and I am in control of this fire.
