Chapter Four: Here we go Again
I am staring, intensely at those pieces of wood, trying to make up my mind as to if I should, or should not work my little bit of magic over them and start a fire. A wind blows through the cave, chilling the air, a wave of goose bumps fly up my arms and spine. Uh, Yah, I think I’m going to risk it. My heart starts pounding as I stand up and walk over to the wood. I glance over at my little water rig, it seems to be working fine, a smile forms on my face, but withers as I kneel down to the wood. I pile them in a grid and put my hand out over it. Now what? Do I blast is with fire? Do I, I, well I can’t really think of anything other than that, but that isn’t the best option. This annoys me, so much! I, I, suddenly I feel a burst of fire out of my hand that envelops the logs. Whoa. I didn’t really try to do that. I touch the wood hesitantly. It’s dry! Yeah! I pick up some of the lighter pieces of bamboo that I, kind of broke in the process of making my water rig. I also shove a few handfuls of dried moss under the logs. I place my hand over the wood again, and try and focus again. Very few times have I ever purposefully tried to create fire. I better start learning. I breath in, and holding my breath for a second I push, with my hand. Another blast of fire erupts from my hand and engulfs the fire. The heat radiates off, tingling my face, warming me. At last, I am warm. Smiling to myself, I take my blanket and wrap it around my back. Warmth from the fire, on my front, warmth from the blanket, on my back, I am finally comfortable. One last thing to do, sadly, I suppose I must leave my comfortable little cocoon of warmth and wander over to my water rig. I do it anyways. I peer inside. What will I find? I find a tin can of water, at least 1 cup. I take a couple sips of water, satisfying my thirst. The rest, I will boil my berries in. I take the tin of water back to my fire, which is burning quite nicely. I find a place that will securely hold my tin, and place the metal tin of water in to it, then pour a handful of berries into it. I stir it a little with a bamboo stick, and lay down in wait.
It seems like it’s been an hour, and the berries are finally starting to burst, slowly the clear water turns light pink, as I watch it intently. It’s been about ten minutes, and the mixture is almost ready. The skins have floated to the top, and I can easily skin them off and toss them aside. No real use for them.
Finally, it’s ready for me to drink. The tin is to hot to touch, and I don’t have any other cups to pour into. The only thing I can think of doing, is waiting for it to cool down. I pick up a small rod of bamboo and carefully with my knife edge a portion of it out. I dip it into the mixture and pull up, bringing with me a bit of the berry stew. I blow on it, cooling it down, I take a sip. The flavor is sweet, a bit tart, but sweet still and very smooth. I keep doing this until I am satisfied, but I still have some left. I leave it on the fire to continue to cook, it won’t burn, and lay down.
My eyes start to waver as the sun sinks down out of view. I wrap the blanket around my body and close my eyes.
I lay there, warm stomach, warm body, finally comfortable. Slowly I begin to drift, off, to—
I wake up the next morning, seemingly stuck to the ground. Is it that I’m to tired to wake up, or, or, was somebody pinning me down! No, not the fist, I don’t see anyone at least. Look around, but something seems to be pulling my hair down, my head. What on earth! I quickly sit up, my hair reluctantly following. My tassels of, red, no, blond fall around my face! What happened! I hesitantly, with a shaky hand, reach up to touch my hair. I have dark red hair, not blond! I look behind me, to find that my tin of berry soup had spilled over, apparently falling onto my hair, and bleaching it! This is crazy. What, wait, I’m having an idea! The people of the Red Nation all have either dark red hair, or brown hair. The people in the White lands though, have blond, and the same eye color as us. If I can find a way to get across the EelleSea to the White Lands, I could blend in. How? How to do that? I would need a boat, but I can’t ask someone to take me across, the people of each nation don’t intermingle with the other nations. I have never met someone that wasn’t from the Red Nation. This might be my ticket out of here though. My summer house! We have a boat there, a three person paddle boat. That should be enough for me right, and possibly supplies. Yah, I think that will work.
