It was a few months later and Cedric was now ruling as king. The people happily accepted the young boy who had saved their town and their lives. The former king was still highly respected and his word did mean a lot. He was the royal adviser after all. Cedric let Richard keep his room at the castle and also let whoever "She" was stay a secret. At least for now. The truth would come later, but now was the time to let things be at peace. Segir was still head of the guard but Cedric also appointed him as Richards personal knight, which both of them were quite pleased with.
As for the assassins guild, Xavier had put an end to it. He rounded up everyone that was left and told them that he was sorry for letting the guild grow into what it had become. The assassin could still live in the secret town that they had built, but they were never allowed to murder again. Some had disagreed and left to find something suitable for their talents, but most were happy to take the deal. Xavier also gave Zach, the assassin that helped Cedric out before, the responsibility of making sure that everyone followed the new rule. Zach was happy that there was no more killing, and he often visited Cedric and his old mentor. The mage and assassin happily spared with each other, just so they wouldn't get rusty.
Onto Max now, Cedric had to practically force him to move into the castle. He had promoted him and made him the castle blacksmith, so now he made weapons and armor strictly for the kingdom. Max may have grumbled and complained about having to leave his old workshop behind, but he was happy to be closer to Cedric and to be directly helping the kingdom.
Hion was now a very happy horse and was fed the best apples everyday. Cedric still rode him through the forest and around town, giving both of them much needed exercise.
Then there was Hugo. Cedric walked through the streets of Sor'real, waving to his subjects. He saw a beggar asking people for money so, taking a bag of gold out of his pocket, handed it to him. The beggar looked at him and smiled, with few teeth missing. Cedric smiled back and continued walking. He didn't realize how far he had walked until he came across it.
A statue of Hugo had been built to commend his bravery and sacrifice. It showed him standing there looking up at the sky, clutching his staff. Engraved on the base of the statue were the words 'Hugo. A brave, kind selfless soul who did all he could for the kingdom and it's people.'
Cedric ran his hand across the words.
'You should see me now.' The mage thought 'Turns out I was meant to be king, although for some reason I think you knew that. I wish you were still alive, I would have made you my court wizard. I'm so sorry that I wasn't out there fighting with everyone else. If I had been then maybe you still would be alive. I know that right now you'd be telling me not to blame myself and maybe you're right, but I do and I'm not sure if I'll ever stop. But I'll try, for you.'
Just then a guard came running up to him.
"Sorry to interrupt m'lord, but there is urgent business you must attend to. Cedric nodded and began to walk away, glancing one again behind him.
'Goodbye, old friend.'
