Family

South let me meet,

His family today,

Had to do a project,

Anyways, it worked out

They were nice,

Like him,

Nice Southern people,

Who didn't serve food,

Out of a can

"I love them."

"Me too."

I did,

They were so kind,

So loving,

Valued each other,

Learned to look past human nature,

To a deeper side of themselves

"Thanks?"

"Yes.

Different from mine."

"How so?"

"They care.

They cook.

They feel."

"Oh.

Yours don't?"

"No.

They're like,

Ghosts."

"Oh.

Can I,

Meet them?"

I blink,

Confused,

Set the work down,

Wonder how,

We can have a project,

In math class,

Wonder if,

He's deaf

"Maybe."

Back to work.

Days later,

He's at my house,

Cause his parents aren't home,

My mom is,

Greets him,

Trying to act nice,

Offers Goldfish,

And some water,

He obviously rejects,

But says thanks anyways,

Cause he's sweet like that

South likes our TV,

It's bigger than his,

And HD,

With wires and gadgets,

Hooked up to it

"Wii, X-Box? Playstation?"

I offer, not sure,

"Doesn't matter."

I turn on the old X-Box,

With a Star Wars game in it,

"Ok?"

"Yeah, fine."

We play,

He's a pink AT-ST,

That's what you get,

For being second player,

I am a blue/metallic one,

Together, we fight,

Shoot, shoot, shoot,

Bang!

I don't know what this old game is,

I lost the case,

But I used to play it with Gage,

Before X-Box fell out of style,

And 360s or whatever came in,

I like my classic games

"You're good."

"Thanks, you too."

Mom comes in, rolls her eyes,

Leaves us geeks alone

"Your mom-"

"Hates me."

"No.

She just doesn't know,

What to say,

I think."

I consider it,

Don't know if it's true,

Seems it I guess

"Why?"

"I don't know,

I can't read minds."

I wish I were super human,

I wish I knew,

Why my family, always felt sad,

And broken

At holidays, they sometimes bickered,

Or sometimes didn't speak at all,

But I guess that's ok,

I'm busy praticing,

Or playing games,

Or listening to music,

Or all three

"I like yours better."

He shrugs,

"Family,

Is family,

Is family.

Isn't it a rule,

To love them?"
