11: Change Of Plans

Present Day: En Route To Mystery Location (The planet Chrous)

Carolina had been driving for what seemed like forever. They hadn't taken a break since they'd left Armonia; both her eyes and her foot were starting to get tired. York had offered take over about an hour or two ago, but she'd declined. At that point, she'd still felt fine and she didn't want to make everyone else stop just for the sake of her getting a break. But when the whole group unanimously decided to stop, she wasn't about to argue. Getting out and stretching her legs was going to feel good.

Church was driving the jeep ahead of her — Tex had tried to insist on driving, but he refused to let her. He'd apparently missed being able to operate a vehicle while he was an A.I. Behind them was Tucker and Caboose. Carolina could almost hear Tucker complaining over the sound of the jeeps' engines. Following behind them, bringing up the rear, was Dr. Grey and Maine. Bringing Maine along was purely for security reasons. With his size and strength, it made him very intimidating. Not to mention he could take out almost anyone and anything in his path. Considering they didn't know what they were going up against or walking into, Carolina felt better having him tag along.

By the time everyone came to a stop near a small clearing, Carolina's legs were cramping awfully. It seemed like everyone else was in the same situation. All the others were pretty eager to escape the confines of the vehicles. Granted, Tucker was more happy to be out of close proximity with Caboose, but she figured being able to walk around was a bonus for him.

"Thank God," Tex said as she got out of the jeep with Church. "If we were gonna keep going, I was tempted to just jump out and run. My legs were starting to fall asleep."

York groaned as he let himself practically fall out of the vehicle. "Same here. And how much further do we have to go until we get to wherever it is we're going?"

Alpha appeared next to Church's head. "If we continue at our current speed, it will take roughly another eight hours to reach our destination."

"Eight hours?" Tucker groaned. "There's no way in hell I'm gonna be able to drive for another six hours today. I can't. Besides that, it's getting dark outside. And I don't know about anyone else, but I don't trust driving in the dark."

"You don't have to be such a big baby about the driving," Tex told him. "Driving in the dark isn't the worst thing in the world. And it'd be better for us to get there sooner rather than later."

"Actually, I believe Captain Tucker has a point," Delta stated, materializing beside York. "Driving at night in difficult, unknown terrain can prove to be very dangerous. And the headlights from the jeeps may attract unwanted attention."

"Well, there you have it. The A.I.s have spoken," York said with a shrug. "Looks like we're making camp for the night, then. Besides, the jeeps really should be refueled."

Church nodded in agreement. "Good idea. There should be plenty of fuel cans in the back of one of the jeep Tucker was driving."

Caboose came out from around the side of the jeep. "Gas cans? But you told me those were lemonade cans!"

"What are you talking about?" Church asked. "When did I ever tell you that?"

"You said that the first week we met!" Caboose exclaimed.

The Blue leader laughed nervously. "Oh, right . . . Caboose, have you really been drinking the —"

"The first one was kinda rough. I thought it tasted kinda bad," the other Blue said. "But I kept drinking them. I didn't want you guys to think you were bad at making lemonade."
