Prologue: Accepting Fate
When one's whole life comes down to one insane decision, it really puts everything else you've ever done into perspective. Church knew that feeling better than anyone. Over the years, he'd made his fair share of insane choices. But none of them came close to the one he was about to make — it could ultimately end his life.
The guys would be in good hands, at least. With the freelancers around, they'd be looked after. They'd be all right. Church knew the guys still had years ahead of them to go on more misadventures and have fun. If they knew how to do anything, it was how to turn anything into an adventure.
Granted, there were going to be some downsides. Tucker would hate him forever, Caboose would be extremely upset. And Tex . . . Well, how she would react was up in the air. The Reds would probably be happy, though. There'd be one less Blue around to deal with.
No matter how things went, Church had a pretty strong feeling he'd never see any of his friends again. But they'd be okay — he knew that. The guys would do well for themselves on Chorus, and the freelancers would be around to help them. Maybe they'd even regain some of the respect they'd lost years ago. Church wished he could be around to see things fall into place for everyone; after everything, it would've been a good reward. But at least he'd be leaving them all with the information and tools they'd need to finish the fight for Chorus.
Church knew the whole thing seemed maudlin, but there was really no other way to think about it.
This was, after all, the story of how he died.
