Another week later the President General joined his wives for supper and requested that Amina be seated at his right hand. Lisa helped Amina get dressed into a fancy African print dress that evening explaining what a great honour it was to sit at the President's table which was usually reserved for the favourite wife and that one only became the favourite wife after being a wife for a long while.
Amina didn't care at all about being the favourite wife all she was worried about was whether it would be the night the President summoned her to his rooms.
If looks could kill, Amina would have dropped dead from the nasty looks she got from the older wives as she took her seat next to the President. Once everyone was settled the maids served the food. It was a more formal dinner and less quiet than usual."Good evening my dear" the President said to Amina "How are you enjoying your new home?"
Amina didn't want to answer but she was afraid anything displeasing she did would translate into a beating later if she was summoned. So she plastered a smile on her face and said "It is very nice here, sir"
"That is good to hear" he said "If you need anything do not hesitate to let me know. Just tell one of the maids and they will make sure I receive your request"
Amina wondered if any of the previous favourite wives had been given the right to request things of the President.
"Thank you" Amina said.
She was indeed summoned that night. The President's room which was more of a suite was large and magnificent but Amina found that she hated it because it reminded her of hell with its red rugs and red beddings. Amina closed her mind and did her duty as an obedient wife. Afterwards the President presented Amina with a present. It was a beautiful diamond bracelet that on any other day and in any other situation Amina would have loved. But just as everything else that had to do with the President she hated it. All the same Amina accepted her present with a smile and false enthusiasm.
The following morning Amina was escorted back to her room in the wives house by one of the maids where she found Serwa anxiously waiting for her.
"Good morning favourite wife" Serwa said to Amina with a hint of sarcasm
"Good morning" said Amina sitting down on the couch next to Serwa
"The whole house is talking about you. The President has never given a wife the right to ask anything of him. You my friend, are something special" said Serwa
"If it all means I'll be summoned more often then I'd rather be the least favourite wife" replied Amina shivering from memories of last night.
"What is that?" Serwa asked upon noticing the velvet box her friend was holding.
Amina wordlessly handed the box to Serwa.
"Wow!" exclaimed Serwa as soon as he opened the box. "Did he give this to you?"
"Yes" Amina said thinking what a waste it was because some starving family could use the money used to buy the bracelet to feed themselves for maybe even a whole year.
"Well that's another first. No wife has ever gotten a gift" said Serwa
Just then Chanda walked into the room her eyes going wide at the sparkling bracelet in Serwa's hand.
"Amina is that yours?"
Amina simply nodded
"You've put a spell on the President" Chanda joked "You have some powerful Juju"
Serwa laughed and Chanda joined in.
Amina rolled her eyes at her friends "Let's go for breakfast before Mary comes in here shouting about punctuality"
