Jealousy

~

Hand-in-hand, Amy and Caellum made their way towards the school; Caellum dragged his feet against the ground, tensing as they passed through the door. Amy squeezed his hand and smiled at him. “Hey,” she whispered. “Relax.”

Caellum nodded, but didn’t look very convinced. “Stay with me,” he muttered.

Amy nodded and the pair made their way into the lift. “What happened to Lucien?” she asked, looking up at Caellum nervously.

“He ran off like the coward he is,” Caellum growled, turning his head away so Amy couldn’t see the hurt expression on his face.

Amy nodded and they fell silent, neither of them knowing what to say to the other. The lift doors opened and Caellum marched out, his arms swinging by his sides. Amy scurried after him, running for a few steps to keep up with his brisk pace.

Solon appeared through one of the doors and he stared at both of them, his eyes flitting between Caellum and Amy in surprise. He quickly regained his composure and frowned. “What are you doing here?” he hissed, glaring at Caellum. “It’s not wise for you to return.”

Caellum bowed his head. “I am still an Elder and it is my duty to oversee the complete training of my students. I will gladly accept any punishment I need to have because of my actions.”

Solon nodded slowly, but still looked concerned. “If it was completely up to me, I would allow you back, but I don’t know if the other Elders will be so … forgiving.”

“But, Solon, you are the head! Surely you have the ultimate decision.” Amy protested, earning a sharp glance from the Elder.

“As much as I’d like that to be true, that is not what our society is about. We believe that democracy is important, so no decision is made by one person.”

Amy sighed, glancing at Caellum to see what his thoughts were; he looked just as annoyed as her. “There must be something I can do,” he protested. “Something that would overturn the judgement of the elders.”

Solon shook his head. “I’m afraid not. The only thing that could prove your honour to this school is to bind yourself to it for a thousand years confinement as their personal slave.”

Amy’s jaw dropped. “A thousand years?” she cried. “But that’s like an eternity.”

“You’re forgetting that an eternity is a long time, much longer than just a thousand years.”

Amy shook her head in amazement. She knew that Vampires could live forever, but she hadn’t realised just how slow it would actually go. Maybe death was a better option. Maybe having your allotted time meant you valued everything more.

“I will do that,” Caellum muttered.

Amy’s eyes shot to his. “What?” she whispered.

Solon looked equally surprised and shook his head. “There is no way I could allow you to do that Caellum. I’m sorry.”

“Why not?!” he demanded.

“I’m not letting you give up on your future because of some petty mistake. You should have bigger ambitions than this,” Solon replied calmly.

Caellum sighed, glancing at the floor. “What am I supposed to do then if I can’t return?”

“You could help me outside the school. Dangerous things lie outside the closed doors,” Solon replied.

“But what am I meant to do about it?” he asked.

“My nephew Caleb will explain everything, just give him this,” Solon replied, passing Caellum a scroll.

“What is it?”

“A letter.”

“A letter about what?”

“Explaining what I need you to do,” Solon replied. “Amy, I think it would be best if you go and see Robert – he’s been worried about you.”

Caellum tensed and Amy slipped her hand calmly into his, giving it a tight squeeze. “Remember to visit me,” she whispered in his ear, before making her way towards the dormitory.

Watching her go, Caellum sighed and he returned his attention on Solon, who was raising his eyebrows.

“What was that?” he asked.

“What?” Caellum asked.

“Are you and Amy a couple?”

Caellum stared at him. “I … er …”

“I hope not, because she means a lot to Robert and he’s been pining for his girlfriend.”

“Girlfriend?”

“Amy of course. The nurse told me they kissed in the infirmary. Keep up, Caellum,” Solon said, clicking his fingers in his face.

Caellum looked down at the floor, feeling like his heart was being ripped into a thousand tiny pieces. He quickly coughed and turned away, briskly making his way towards the lift.

“Oh and Caellum, be careful of who you put your trust in. Not everyone has a nice streak,” Solon instructed.

Caellum nodded; he’d made that mistake once before and it had cost him his father’s life. He shook his head, pushing out the memory of his father’s dying voice. “Run Caellum. There’s nothing more you can do for me. Go.” Guilt coursed through Caellum’s body as he tried to push the memory from the front of his mind; he didn’t want to be reminded. It was too painful. How was he meant to live with himself knowing that he was the reason his father was dead? Caellum stabbed the lift button with his hand, marching inside. He cast one last look at Solon, before the doors slid shut and he rocked towards the surface.

Amy pushed open the dormitory door and was immediately engulfed in a bone-shattering hug. She hugged Robert back, sighing into his neck.

“I’ve missed you,” he whispered, kissing her cheek softly.

Amy pulled away quickly and made her way towards Rodney, who was sitting quietly on his bed. She smiled at him kindly, slipping down beside him. Robert glared at them both, before angrily storming out of the dormitory. Amy watched him leave, sighing in relief. She wasn’t quite sure where her head was at the moment.

She looked at Rodney, studying his expression. Something was bothering him, she could see it in his eyes. They no longer sparkled cheekily; they were deeply sunken and dull.

 “Rodney?” she whispered, “what’s wrong?”

Trouble in paradise? ... Well I can hardly call it paradise ... but you get what I'm saying. Something's up with Rodney ;) I would love it if you told me what you think is wrong with him. It would be interesting to see if anyone guesses it correctly

What are your views on who Amy should choose?
