Chapter Five — THE BEGINNING OF THE TURN?
Amy awoke a few hours later to find Robert sat on Rodney's bed, book in hand. He looked up at her as she rubbed her eyes and pulled herself up into a sitting position.
"How are you feeling?" he asked. "I saw you sink against the glass and then Caellum went running towards you."
He put his book down and made his way towards her as she struggled to find words to explain what had happened. He wrapped her in a tight embrace, pulling their bodies closer. "I was so worried," he mumbled against her neck.
Amy gasped at their sudden closeness, her heart was fluttering in her chest as he didn't let go. He almost felt reluctant to let her go in case she'd ask him why he'd impulsively hugged her. In truth, he felt he had to comfort her because she was his best friend, but there was something more.
There was always something more between them.
Warm sparks shot through Amy's stomach as she clung tighter to him, scared to let him go. He didn't resist as he sat himself down on the bed, not breaking their hug. He rocked her gently back and forth, rubbing soothing circles on her back. It took all of Amy's might not to break down into tears as Robert cradled her.
He cared.
And she was scared to admit that she cared too.
"What happened?" he whispered, his breath warm against her cheek. "What was in the box?"
Amy shook her head, screwing her eyes tightly shut, afraid that the image of her mother would appear again. She let out a strangled sob as she tightened her arms around him, his black shirt scrunched in her balled fists.
"Amy?" He nuzzled his face into the crook of her neck and she felt her breathing quicken. What was he doing to her?
They were just friends.
"Yeah?" she whispered.
"I — I really need to tell you something," he began.
She pulled away from him slightly and gazed at him with curiosity. He flushed pink and looked away clearing his throat nervously. Watching him intently, Amy slid her legs out of the bed and hung them over the side.
Just as he had gained the courage to tell her, the door slammed wide causing them both to jump apart.
"Robert!" Rodney fumed red faced and angry. "I am going to kill you!"
Robert and Amy's eyes flickered to him and they both had to slap a hand across their mouths to conceal the laughter that was rising in their throats. Rodney stood before him, his usually blonde hair a shade of electric blue.
"Wow, nice hair, Rod," Robert teased, smirking. "It's a little different."
Amy snorted, earning a sharp glare from Rodney in response. He shook his head at her, rolling his eyes, as he returned his focus to his brother.
"I KNEW YOU DID THIS!" Rodney screeched, darting towards Robert with his fists clenched, poised to punch.
"I did not!" his twin replied, jumping from the bed just in time as Rodney threw himself forward.
Amy squealed, ducking out of Rodney's way as Robert ran towards the door, chortling.
"You are so dead, bro! You'd better start running!"
The twins sped away at full speed, pushing past Hannah and Cassidy, who had emerged in the doorway. Cassidy was shouldered by Robert in his haste to leave and she went tumbling to the floor. She glared after their retreating figures, her eyes smouldering. "JERKS!" she screamed, before hauling herself off the floor. "That's the second time he's done that!"
