Chapter 3 — THE WOODS
The lift finally came to a stop just before they reached the surface and Caellum led the teenagers out into a small dimly lit room. Amy looked around observing the wooden walls and stone floors, something never seen below ground, as Caellum pressed his ear to a huge wooden panelled door, his back turned on the group.
"What's he listening for?" Amy muttered, watching as their instructor knocked on it three times with his knuckles, clenched fist and hard.
"I haven't got a clue," Robert whispered, his gaze fixed intently on the door.
There was a sound of clinking metal as at least half a dozen locks were being opened. Finally the door swung back on its hinges, revealing a tall, dark haired stranger. Amy gave a start as she saw him. He was the splitting image of Caellum, except perhaps slightly taller and bore a deep jagged scar that ran the length of his cheek from his left ear to the corner of his mouth.
Caellum glared at the man before him, which was returned with an equally cold glare by the other man. Caellum shouldered past him, making his way through the snaking halls. The group followed; they were acutely aware that the man was following them in silence as they weaved through the halls.
"Caellum," the man boomed, before they could reach an iron door at the far end of the corridor they had turned onto. Stopping abruptly, Caellum swung around and shot him a questioning glance.
"What?" he snarled.
"I wouldn't stray too far. The woods are dangerous for amateurs like your lot," the man growled back, his eyes fixed intently on Amy.
She shivered, taking a step closer to Robert, who instinctively wrapped an arm around her. Still the man didn't remove his gaze.
"We'll be fine," Caellum replied hotly, glancing quickly at Robert's arm that was still holding Amy close, before returning his angry stare to the man.
"I can't let you out into the woods, brother," the man said.
Caellum glared at him. "You have no say over what I do, Lucien."
Sighing, the man — Lucien — rolled his eyes. "You'd be a lot safer if you did! It's too dangerous being on the weaker side, you know that Caellum. Be sensible."
"Solon put me in charge," Caellum argued defensively. "And I am now an Elder, so I give the orders. You follow them."
Lucien sighed and turned away, meaning the conversation was over. Caellum proceeded to unbolt the door and kick it open angrily with his foot. "Let's go!" he shouted.
The students ran past him in single file. Robert went before Amy, who was last. She braced herself, staring nervously outside. She was scared to go outside, what if it wasn't safe? Lucien had seemed to think that it was dangerous, so perhaps there were things outside that were realistic threats to them.
"Amy?"
She looked around at her name. She saw Caellum standing before her, looking concerned. "What's wrong?"
"What if it's dangerous outside? How are we supposed to protect ourselves? We don't know how to," she gushed, her anxiousness pouring out of her.
Caellum smiled. "I'll protect you all, I promise."
