Little warning before you read this - when I wrote this I was tiRED AS FUCK. And messed up from that jab. And just generally writing it quickly. I wrote out the plan on my laptop, came upstairs for the night, left my laptop downstairs, and started writing it without the plan because I had spare time of doing nothing.
The song is Two birds by Regina Spektor. I've had the idea for a few good months now but only just recently began to write it properly, maybe a week or two ago. So haVE FUN AND IF IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE I WAS SUPER TIRED AND I KNOW I REPEATED SOME STUFF BUT HEY 'UNFINISHED STUFF' IS IN THE TITLE SO YAAAYAYYAYAYAYAYYA
ALSO THE WRITING IS TOO LONG BETWEEN VERSES TO READ IN TIME WITH THE SONG SO UNLESS YOU'RE UP FOR SOME NEAT STOPPING AND STARTING THEN I'M SORRY.
-
Two birds on a wire,
One tries to fly away,
And the other,
Watches him close from that wire,
He says he wants to as well,
But he is a liar.
Beef and Pause looked at each other sadly.
"I just think... I just think it'd be better," Pause said quietly. "I want to go, I want to go and do things, Beef. We'll still be friends, definitely, but... I..."
Pause trailed off, not knowing how to say what he wanted to say without hurting Beef. Beef, on the other hand, didn't need to be told.
Beef knew he wasn't ready to let go of their friendship. And he knew Pause was doing this because Pause knew he was afraid. Pause knew Beef was afraid to do anything new, afraid of his future. And that Pause wanted to go out and do these new things, Pause wanted to change his life, Pause wasn't afraid of what the future held. That Beef was what was holding him back from what he wanted to do. And that, even after his breakup... Beef was determined to stay holding on to their friendship. He wasn't going to let it die. They'd known each other since they were young, really young, and he wasn't going to let that go to waste, he wasn't going to let the memories go to waste. But it seemed like Pause... wasn't so worried about losing everything. Which was typical of him.
Beef stayed silent, staring blankly at Pause, thoughts racing. I CAN'T LET GO OF OUR FRIENDSHIP I CAN'T LET GO OF OUR FRIENDSHIP I CAN'T LET GO OF OUR FRIENDSHIP I CAN'T LET HIM LEAVE I CAN'T LET HIM LEAVE I CAN'T LET HIM LEAVE IF HE LEAVES I'M BROKEN IF HE LEAVES I'M BROKEN IF HE LEAVES I'M BROKEN.
"Why?" Beef asked eventually, in a tiny voice. "Why are you going? Why are you leaving?"
Pause felt a frown form on his face. "Because I've always wanted to, Beef,"
"And I'm the one that was holding you back from doing that,"
"N - no! Not that -"
"It was though, and I know it,"
"Why are you so scared of the future?" Pause asked him. But in reality, Pause had it wrong. It was the true answer to this question that was why he was afraid, it wasn't the future itself.
Beef had reasons to be afraid. Oh, Beef had reasons, but if he told Pause, he knew Pause would think him silly and stupid. "I don't know," he said.
"You have no reason to be," Pause said gently.
But I do, Beef thought, but didn't say it.
"I'm - I'm not scared of the future," he said. "I'm just - I'm not ready,"
