It was almost five and Harry had not seen a sign that Bessie was there. He walked around the entire park three times, scoped the field four times, and searched the lake twice.
'Had Ell tricked me?' Harry thought to himself.
He was losing hope fast. Harry had great expectations on seeing Bessie, but they were withering away with the minutes. Thirty minutes now. Harry finally decided to give up and go to Ell's house to get a great big bottle of vodka. Ell always had a big stash of liquor in her basement. No matter how big the party she threw, Ell's basement never lacked rows and rows of the good stuff.
Harry gave a long sigh and headed toward the parking lot. He knew not to get his hopes too high, but he did anyway. The next time he saw Ell, he decided to give her a taste of her own medicine.
Out of the blue, a soccer ball hit Harry in the face causing him to fall to the ground.
'Great,' Harry thought, 'now I'm going to have a black eye.'
"Mercy Maud! Are you O.K.?" a familiar Southern accent penetrated his thoughts.
"I will be," Harry moaned as he opened his eyes, expecting to get blinded by the sunlight, but instead, a young face blocked the sun by kneeling down near him.
Harry smiled when he saw the young face. He never thought he would see those pretty grey eyes again. Her orange hair gracefully framed her face, which had a worried expression painted on it.
"Ello Bessie," Harry smiled up at her.
"Harry! You dog!" Bessie laughed, "Here, let me help you up."
Bessie held out her hands for Harry to take, which he took without hesitation. Bessie easily pulled Harry up from his laying position on the ground. The moment Harry got up, he noticed there were two kids standing to the side watching them with wide eyes. Both had flaming red hair and freckles plastered across their faces.
"Bessie, I don't want to scare you, but there are two kids watching us right now," Harry whispered.
Bessie just laughed and said, "I know. Those kids are my children."
Harry could see it now. The girl was the spitting image of Bessie, just several feet smaller. The boy looked similar to Bessie, but he had a different nose. The nose makes all the difference. Though he had ocean blue eyes, they were still filled with Bessie's spirit.
"They look a lot like you," was all Harry could say. The fact that Bessie had kids was starting to sink in.
"I'm told every day. Do you want to meet them?," Bessie asked with a big smile.
Harry was hesitant, but followed Bessie over to the kids. Once up close, Harry could see how identical those twins were.
"Harry, I want you to meet my kids. Lacie May and Robert. Lacie, Bobby, this is my friend Harry," Bessie said to brake the ice.
"Hello," Harry said awkwardly.
"Hi," Lacie said with a warm smile.
"Robert," Bessie said with a stern face.
"Hi," Robert spat out.
Still not satisfied, Bessie gave Robert the look. Robert just looked away and kicked at the grass.
"Would you like to join our soccer game?" Lacie smiled.
Feeling more comfortable with the mention of a footy game, Harry said, "I would love to."
Harry was taken back when Lacie started to pull Harry towards the field. It may not be so hard after all to be there friend at least Lacie's friend. Robert seemed to be harder to warm up to.
"To make it even, you will be on my team and Momma will be on Bobby's team," Lacie explained as Bessie made her way to the field with Robert sulking behind her.
"The first one to ten points wins!" Bessie said once she placed the ball in the middle of the filed.
"Go play rock, paper, scissors with Momma to see who has the ball first," Lacie suggested.
"I warn you, I am not very good at that game," Harry said, "may I have a good luck kiss?"
Harry pointed to his check as Lacie giggled and placed a quick kiss right were he pointed.
"We surly will win now," Harry said with a wink.
Lacie just giggled and blushed back. Harry knew he won Lacie over.
When he reached Bessie, he realized she was wearing Nike shorts and a well fitted Guns & Roses t-shirt. Her orange hair was in a high pony tail with an 'I dream of genie' look. The t-shirt really made a difference on Bessie's figure. Good thing Harry was wearing jeans or things would have become awkward.
"Shall we?" Bessie said with her right fist in the palm of her lift hand.
Harry did the same with his hands. They hit their left palm with their fist three times then looked down to see who won.
"Scissors bet paper! Take that!" Harry yelled in joy.
"My good luck kiss worked!" Lacie squealed.
"It sure did!" Harry smiled.
Harry picked Lacie up in the air and swirled her several times as she laughed her head off. Harry could see Bessie and Robert out of the conor of his eye. Bessie was smiling at the sight. It made her happy. But Robert, he was sad. He wanted to be the one having fun with Harry but he was stuck on the side lines as his sister got the attention as usual.
"I hope you're good," Lacie said as they started to play a new game.
"I'm the one hoping you're good," Harry smiled.
Lacie just smiled as she got into position.
Harry knew this was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Author's Note - Sorry, I had to quote Casablanca. It was destiny for that moment. Comment if you known or even seen Casablanca. If you haven't, I recommend you watch it. "He's looking at you kid," is also from that movie. FYI. Thanks for reading!
