Three days passed and all I could do was stay in my house reliving that day, what I could have done to fix it, where I went wrong when I screwed up.
"I failed..." I repeated as I saw the day over and over for what seemed like years.
I heard a knock at my door but never answered it. A letter was slipped under my door. Footsteps slowly echoed into nothing before I grabbed it. It was a notice of the children's funeral taking place tomorrow.
The next day I stood silently in the back wearing a black suit and my hat and tie given to me by Molly. I also had an ice chest with me as I waited for everyone to leave. After the ceremony and praying, I personally apologized to all the main family as they left. I was the last one there and that's when I went up to the front with my ice chest and sat down.
"How was your day, Molly? Are the boys being silly again?" I said as I began a conversation with them.
"Oh right, I got y'all something," I said pulling out some ice cream from the chest. "I know y'all like vanilla, I looked all day for the perfect flavor, hope you like it."
I began to place an ice cream by each of their respective tombs and ate one with them.
"I really like my tie and hat, they add a good look to me, don't you think?"
"Yeah, guess the colors are a bit dull but so am I," I said laughing. "See.... I kept my promise didn't I?"
"Huh? My heart? Oh, it's fine, it's just...weeping."
Far away Jimmy had been keeping tabs on me and knew my state. He was in a dark room in front of a table with pictures of multiple people in town, from the chief to the maid at the café.
"Just one more push," Jimmy said, carving out a face with his letter opening.
"You're next.... Nakamura Suki...."
"Yato, it's been a week. Are you feeling okay?" Nakamura said, knocking on my door.
I laid in my bed looking up to the ceiling as I felt my soul rotting more and more.
"Guess not..." he said walking off.
Nakamura returned to the station and was bombarded by Berry and the Chief.
"Sorry, but he's not even responding to me."
"Guess I'll handle it," Berry said, having a spare key to my house.
"No don't do that, give him some time!" Nakamura said.
"He can't waste more time, there are criminals that need to be caught and only he can do it!" Berry yelled.
"You may be right, Berry my boy, but Yato needs more time, no use in him coming back if he's not all there, he could get himself killed along with many others," the chief said.
"I know but.... nothings ever gotten him like this before, I fear if it's not fixed now.....it never will be," Berry grumbled.
"One week," Nakamura said. "In one week, if he's not better we will both go and fix him up."
"Fine, let's hope it doesn't come to that," Berry said as his work phone went off.
"Sorry, looks like I got to run," he said answering to what sounded like a very angry man.
"Well with Yato out of commission that makes you next in line for top PI of Brendon town," the chief. "I don't think you're ready and you have a lot to learn but right now, you're the best we got."
"I'm on it, chief, I won't let you down!"
Nakamura got a few files from his desk and headed to his car.
