“Will you marry me?”

The question he was always frightened to ask. It was as if every word would haunt him in his dreams. But this time, he was sure of it. He was sure that this is what he wanted, praying it’s what she wanted too. Waiting for the answer gave him excitement and anxiety at the same time. It could be the best or the worst for him. A ‘yes’ would make him the happiest man on earth, while hearing a ‘no’ would break his heart to a million pieces and he didn’t know if he would ever recover from it.

Holding the shimmering diamond ring in front of her, he could feel how surprised she was. With her hands on her mouth, her eyes almost glistening from the tears she was trying to hold back. All she knew was that he would bring her to some casual dinner like they usually do for almost two years now. Time for a change, he thought. Time to take it to the next level.

After a fair few thrilling minutes, she finally said ‘yes.’ Tears already falling from her icy blue eyes, happiness filling all over the place, and all he could do after hearing that one word was get up and shout to the whole world how happy he was he’s finally engaged to the best woman in the world, his world, while she just couldn’t stop giggling and tearing up. It was the best night not only for Adam, but also to his life, Christina.

But the unexpected is yet to come….

[Christina]

9:36PM, the clock on the wall says. Christina was walking back and forth on her living room waiting for her fiancé to come home. He was late, again. The first time, it was acceptable, but for the second time, she wasn’t sure anymore. It wasn’t usual of him to get this late. Usually, he calls when he couldn’t get home on early, but lately, she’s just not receiving any calls or even messages.

The food on the table was starting to get cold. She prepared his favorite meal and she made it more special with candle lights and rose petals scattered on the table and on the floor. She had bought the best wine the supermarket had to offer. He promised he would be home at seven. He promised. Seconds, minutes, hours had passed. It was as if every time the clock’s hand would move to another digit, it would eat her alive.

She walked to the dining room and started to put the foods away. Several hours ago, she was so excited to taste them all; now, she couldn’t even look at the set up she made without feeling upset. While she put the roasted chicken on a Tupperware, she heard a car pulled on their driveway. He was home, but he was late and she was supposed to be mad. Instead, she stopped on what she was doing and put the roasted chicken back on the plate.

Adam walked right up to her and kissed her forehead. “I’m sorry,” he apologized. She didn’t know what to say or do. She wanted to slap him for not making it at seven but also she wanted to hug him and be thankful he was home safe and sound.

But instead of giving him a slap or a hug, she just smiled at him and sat down.

“Sit down. It’s not good to let the food wait,” she said, her voice was breaking but she tried to sound like it wasn’t. Adam reheated the chicken and opened the wine. They still ate dinner despite the tension they had in the moment. None of them were speaking. It was an awkward silence between the two lovebirds. Christina sighed and was the first one to break it.

“Why were you late?” she asked. She was calm while asking the question but deep within her; she was feeling a lot like breaking down. He looked down for a while, like he was tensed being asked, then he looked deep into her eyes.
