“Um…can I help you?” I ask the gorgeous, dark-haired man standing before me.
“Here, let me help you,” he says, reaching for my keys.
His hand brushes mine, sending sparks through my body. My headache disappears and the memories come flooding back.
“Nicholas?” I cock my head to one side, looking at him through my dark shades as he unlocks my truck door.
“Yes, Annabelle?”
“I asked you not to call me that. It’s Cadence.” I huff, throwing my purse into my truck.
“I’m sorry,” he says, grabbing my arm before I can get in the truck. The sparks rip through my body again. What is with this man?
“Was that boy on the bike your boyfriend?”
“Derek? Hell no! Besides, why do you care?”
“You intrigue me, Cadence.” He runs his finger down the side of my face. At that moment I remember I am dressed in baggy clothing, no makeup, and my hair is a mess. Thank God I don’t stink.
“Well, if you will excuse me, I need to go home now.” I climb into my truck. Before I am able to shut the door, he grabs my hand and kisses my palm. His touch makes me ache for more.
“Until we meet again,” he says, and then walks away. When I look in the rear view mirror he is gone as if he vanished.
The throbbing in my head returns by the time I reach my front door. Of course my parents are gone for the day already. I am once again returning to an empty house.
No sooner than I walk through my bedroom door my phone starts buzzing.
Hey what happened R U ok? – S
I just got in the door I’ll call u later- C
I don’t feel like talking right now—more like downing a bottle of Advil and going to sleep for a couple hours. I throw my purse in the corner of my room and it falls over. A piece of paper falls out. Odd. I don’t remember that being in there. I pick up the paper and unfold it. I gasp at the words I saw.
Trust no one
Seriously, that is creepy. Someone must be playing a joke on me. I bet Derek put that in there while I was in the shower.
Laughs on you buddy. I toss the note in the trash then climb into bed.
The ground is cold and damp beneath my bare feet. I run through the dark open field, wearing only a black slip. My hair blows in the breeze as I run. My heart is beating faster; it’s becoming harder and harder to catch my breath the further I run. I keep running until I trip over something, sending me crashing to the ground. I scream as someone pulls me by my hair. I struggle to get away, but I can’t break free. He pulls me up from the ground by my hair until I am standing. He places his hand on my throat and starts to squeeze.
I sit straight up in bed, grabbing my throat and scream. I scan my room frantically, looking for any intruders. I look up at the mirror on the back of my door and see the note I threw in the trash taped to it.
