“What the hell, Derek?” I screamed at him. As he sped off into the dark night.

“I had to get you out of there before he came back.” His eyes were staring straight ahead, never once turning to look at me.

“What are you talking about?” I asked very confused.

“That guy you were with, he is bad news. You really need to stay away from him,” he growled.

“You have no right to tell me who I need to stay away from!” I yelled. He was driving so fast I could barely tell where we were going. We were blowing through red lights and stop signs like they didn’t exist.

“Derek, slow down! I want out of this car now!” I screamed reaching for the door handle.

“Don’t you dare move!” I flinched at the harshness in his voice. I have known Derek for a couple years now and he has never acted like this.

“Derek you are scaring me, slow down please before you kill us both,” I pleaded. Tears were falling down my face now.

“Can you shut up for like five minutes? I can’t think with all your whining!” He yelled.

I had one hand on my seat belt buckle and the other on the door handle. If he ever slows down I am going to run.

He continued to race down a gravel road kicking up dust behind him. I could barely make out a building of some sort straight ahead. The building looked really old; there were no cars anywhere in sight. The building was surrounded by rows of trees.

He slowed down as he came closer to the building, and before he stopped the car completely I bolted. I ran as fast as I could straight for the trees. I really wish I had some shoes on right now. I winced at every stick that broke beneath my feet.

“Cadence! Damn it why do you have to be so stubborn,” Derek yelled. I could hear him running behind me.

I have never ran like this before. My chest was aching with every breath; my heart was beating so loudly that I bet they could hear it on the moon. I screamed as I tripped over something hard landing head first into a tree. Damn that hurt. Then everything went black.

I awaken to the sound of running water and the feeling of something warm on my face. I open my eyes to see his face.

“Nicholas?” I try to sit up but he gently pushes me back down.

“Sh, Annabelle, you are safe now. Don’t try to sit up yet. You have a nasty bump on your head,” he said gently washing the cuts on my hands.

“What is going on? How did you find me? What are you?” I rattled off.

“I followed him, and was able to find you before he did.”

“That still doesn’t answer my question! What the hell is going on?” I struggled to sit up. As soon as I made it to a sitting position my head started spinning and nausea began to overwhelm me. I turned to the side and vomited all over the floor. Tears started falling down my face again as I laid back down.

“I told you not to sit up, just lay there while I clean up this mess. Then we have to go to your house and pack some bags.”

“What? Why?” I asked. The taste of bile was thick on my tongue.

“I have to protect you; we have to leave this city now before he finds us again.”

“Who is trying to find us? Derek?” I asked confused. I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand then grabbed the glass of water Nick was handing me.

“No, Derek is simply his gopher,” he said while he wiped up the mess I made on the floor.

“What do you mean his gopher?” I took a sip of the water, swishing it around trying to wash away the bitter taste. Nick left the room then returned with a cool rag and placed it on my head.

“Derek was sent to bring you to him,” he replied still referring to this mysterious person as “him.”

“So who is this person who wants me so badly?” It was really starting to piss me off that he was dodging all my questions.

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” he replied as he finished cleaning the cuts on my right hand.

“That’s it I’m out of here!” I yank my hand from his grasp then jump up trying to steady myself. He grabs me around the waist from behind. I hit him in the gut with my elbow, he flinches but doesn’t let go. I keep squirming trying to break free until my head is spinning so bad I lose my balance knocking both of us to the floor.

“Annabelle, please calm down. You are only hurting yourself more,” he said calmly.

“I will calm down when you tell me who is after me,” I growled as I crawled back towards the couch away from him. I sat against the couch on the floor staring at Nick as he sat up.

He stared straight back at me and muttered one word, “Lucifer.”

“Ok and who is this Lucifer guy and why the hell does he want me?”

“He is the devil,” he replied through his teeth.

“Haha good one. So why does the ‘Devil’ want me?” I laughed as I air quoted the word devil.

“You are his daughter.”
