I awaken to the sound of beeping machines. I try to open my heavy eyes with no success. This is the second time I have found myself in an unknown place. I can hear the voice of a man, it sounds familiar but I am not sure.
“Annabelle, please wake up,” he urges. He touches my hand send a jolt through my body. My eyes fly open to see Nick sitting by my bedside.
“Where am I?” I struggle to ask.
“You are in the hospital.”
“What are you doing here?”
“You collapsed in my apartment,” he replied.
“Well I want to go home now,” I demanded as I tried to get out of the bed. Nick put his hands on my shoulders stopping me from standing up.
“You can’t leave until they make sure all of the drugs are out of your system.”
“What drugs? OMG did you drug me so you could take advantage of me?” I slapped him across the face. How dare him.
“Anna… I mean Cadence if I drugged you do you honestly think I would be sitting by your bedside?” My head was throbbing now and I was dizzy. I lay back in the bed and cover my head with a pillow.
“I guess you have a point there. I’m sorry for slapping you,” I apologized.
“You don’t need to apologize.”
There is something strange about this man that I can’t quite figure out. What is up with the electric feeling every time he touches me? I guess it is time to do some investigating since I have nothing better to do while I lay here in this bed.
“So what do you do for a living, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“I save lives,” he replied.
“So you are a doctor then? You look kind of young to be a doctor if you ask me.”
“I am not a doctor.”
“Ok. How about a firefighter, police officer, or EMT?” I asked very confused now.
“Nope, none of the above.” Ok this guy is messing with me. I look at him puzzled and then smile.
“I got it you are God,” I laughed knowing it was impossible.
“No. Just drop it. I can’t tell you what I do, it is against the rules.”
I am totally confused. Why can’t he tell me what he does? I guess I will just have to find out myself. I turn my head towards the door and see a tiny nurse appear. She is a petite little blonde with her hair pulled in a ponytail. She has on white scrubs and a pink stethoscope hangs around her neck.
“Glad to see you are awake. The doctor says you can go home as long as a parent comes to pick you up.” There is no way I am calling my mom or dad.
“My parents are dead, I live on my own,” I lied; well technically my mom is dead.
“Oh, I see. I am so sorry. Do you have a ride?” she asked.
“I will make sure she gets home safely,” Nick offered. The nurse walks over to me and removes my IV. It stings a little when she pulls it out, but it wasn’t anything unbearable. She proceeds to give me instructions but I don’t hear a word she says. I just nod my head pretending that I understood what she was saying. She ushers Nick out of the room so I could get dressed.
I quickly dress then head out the door. When I step out of the room I jump when I see Nick standing right next to the door.
“Ugh you scared me.”
“I’m sorry. Are you ready to go? I hope you don’t mind but I drove your truck over here because I haven’t had a chance to buy a new car since I moved here.”
“There better not be any scratches or dents in my truck,’ I joked.
“Hey I am a very safe driver,” he laughed.
There is that word safe again. I am still pondering what he means by saves lives. He grabs the keys from my hand as we head out the hospital doors.
“Hey,’ I protest.
“You just got out of the hospital and you are in no shape to drive with that headache of yours.”
I do not remember telling him my head hurt.
