Uneasy Feeling

I can see the whole scene play out before me as I touch her scar. The anger and hurt on her face as she put her arm through the window. This guy had toyed with her emotions and she didn’t like that.

As a guardian, I have the ability to sense things by touch. Sometimes I can see whole scenes. I just get a sense emotion from them and see it. I can also sense death when someone has been marked. I still have yet to figure out why she has been marked.

When she left the bar to talk to the guy on stage I took the opportunity to escape to sense the surroundings. I walk back through the velvet curtain and took a seat in my usually booth. From this spot I could feel the auras of people passing by. I look up to see the boy she calls, Derek, walk in. The uneasy feeling settles over me again. As he passes my table, a rush of nausea sweeps over me.

I have to get closer to get a better reading, so I follow him back through the curtain. I watch as he touches Annabelle. Jealousy runs through my veins. I position myself closer to them so that when he turns to walk away, he will run into me.

It works like a charm—he runs smack in to me. I can’t understand what he is muttering because the vision consumes me. He is talking to a mysterious man dressed in all black, and even though I am watching through his perspective the man’s face is not visible. It is as if someone is blocking the image, making the face blurry so I cannot figure out his identity.

Whoever this man is, he must not want me to find him.

“Sorry, my mistake,” I mumble as the vision fades.

“Seriously, Nick, it wasn’t your fault,” Annabelle says, sounding irritated, and yet reassuring.

“I really should pay attention to where I am walking. I have a bad habit of not looking where I walk. I’ve actually walked into a mirror before” I laugh.

The band was finished setting up and the show is about to start when her friend, Satin, comes running through the doors.

“Did I miss anything?” she asks, sort of out of breath.

“Nope. They just started,” Annabelle yells over the loud music.

I extend my hand out to Satin. “Pleased to meet you. I am Nicholas.”

She blushes as she takes my hand. “I am Satin, Cadences friend. And that is my brother Carter’s band playing on stage.”

I don’t sense any danger from Satin’s touch. Although, I do get a sneak peek of her with another guy in a compromised position that, probably, explains her absence.

“Satin, I’m not feeling very well. I think I need some air,” Annabelle says.

“Cade, I just got here,” Satin complains.

“I will go with you if you would like,” I offer.

Satin nods at her and ushers us out the door. I follow her out into the same alley we kissed in the first time we met. She leans her back against the wall and slides to the ground. She sat there with her knees to her chest, her head on her knees, and with her hands on the back of her head.

“I don’t know what is wrong with me right now. I felt this way last night, and I’ve only had two drinks,” she whispers.

I sit down next to her, against the wall, and off my lap for her to lay her head on.  She repositions herself so that she is in the fetal position with her head on my lap. I take off my jacket and place it over her legs. I gently brush back her hair from her face.

Next thing I see is a vision of the drink that was sitting in front of her at the bar. That is all that I am given. Someone must have slipped her something. If that is the case I cannot let her out of my sight tonight.

“Hey, I have an apartment upstairs above the bar if you would like to rest there until you sober up,” I offer.

“I normally would say no, since we just met yesterday and all, but for some reason I feel really safe around you,” she replies.

I help her stand up, then holding onto her waist I help her up the stairs. I open the door and we walk into my newly furnished living room.

“Make yourself at home.”

I walk to the kitchen area to get her a glass of water, next thing I hear is a thud. I turn around to see her lying on the floor unresponsive.
