“You are such a comedian aren’t you,” she laughed. “How in hell could I be the devil’s daughter?”

“You bare his mark on your lower back,” I explained.

“The mark of the devil huh, let me guess the mark is a pitchfork?”

“I do not find any humor in this, your soul is at stake here,” I grumbled as I packed a bag with some food and water.

“Ok, so if my father is the devil then what does that make you?”

“I am your guardian.”

“Oh this just keeps getting better and better,” she laughed.

“Let’s go, now,” I growled.

I throw the bag over my shoulder then pick her up bridal style and head out the door where a yellow firebird sits in the drive. I hit the trunk button on my keys and throw the bag in the back and slam the trunk shut with my elbow. I manage to open the passenger side door and gently place her on the seat.

“Change of plans, we can’t go back to your house. We need to get as far away from this town as possible. We can buy you some new clothes when we get somewhere safe,” I explained as I put the car into drive.

“You are serious aren’t you? This isn’t a joke is it?” She asked frantically.

“No it is not a joke. If Lucifer gets ahold of you then he will kill you and take your soul back to hell with him. What I don’t understand is how come your mother is still alive?” I asked confused.

“My mother is dead. Why would that matter anyways?” She fidgeted with the hole in her leggings.

“You were adopted then? That makes sense now. Lucifer’s concubines die during childbirth so that he can claim the child at a later time when they reach the appropriate age. Normally the child goes into the foster system where they are never adopted into a family. This makes it easier for him to come back in his mortal form and reclaim their soul.”

“So now he wants me back?” She stared at me with scared eyes.

“You are the only daughter that has been born in over one hundred years. He is looking for you to join him in your rightful place by his side.”

“What do you mean by his side?” She turned her head to look out the window.

“You are his princess. He wants you as his bride to rule next to him in hell.”

“What the hell? Uh no that’s gross!”

“Things don’t work that way in hell. There is no such thing as incest. Besides the devil can marry whoever he chooses. Unfortunately he chooses you.”

The next hour went by in silence; she had fallen asleep shortly after we reached the edge of town. The wind was starting to pick up and the sky was quickly becoming angry as the dark clouds rolled in. Well he is definitely pissed off now. By the looks of the sky he must know that she is under our protection. As long as I am around her he cannot sense her soul.

“Where are we?” She yawned and stretched her arms out in front of her.

“We are headed east at the moment. I am hoping to out run the storm. We should be coming close to the cabin soon.”

“What cabin?” I wish she wouldn’t ask so many questions, the less she knows the better.

“All you need to know is that you will be safe there.”

“Well can we hurry and get to this place because I really have to pee,” She sounded very irritated.

A few minutes later I pull off the highway onto a gravel road. About a mile down the road sits the small log cabin where we will be staying until I figure out what to do next. I pull up close to the side of the house trying to hide the car as much as possible.

I jump out of the car and by the time I make it to her side she is already at the front door dancing.

“You could like hurry up you know!” she yelled. I was almost tempted to just walk a little slower just to irritate her.

I open the door; she walks in and says, “You have got to be kidding me.”
