The sky outside was a pale blue-gray, the sun barely risen over the horizon at the early morning hour. Lui laid tangled in Evan's arms. Their legs latched and twisted; a human pretzel that didn't want to be pulled apart. Both men's breaths were labored. A favorite moment in their days, basking in the aftermath of proving their love and giving affection. Lui's bodily shudder was visible as Evan's fingertips explored his sweat-covered skin. Lui absolutely loved his large hands; fingertips calloused from skillfully pressing guitar strings; the hands themselves large and smooth, covering much of Lui's tanned skin as Evan held him.
Waking up was slightly better. Evan was always an early riser. However, Lui loved his sleep too much. This prompted Evan to occasionally make his favorite breakfast foods and wake his lover with generous kisses. If there was anything Lui loved more than his hands, it was his arms. The bulging muscle held Lui close and encased him in a protective warmth he cherished. It was his favorite thing to feel in the mornings. The firm but tender hold brought his mind back to Earth while it still left his head and his heart high in the clouds.
This morning, however, was vastly different. Neither expected nor wanted these events to occur. Lui was lying awake in bed. Evan left less than ten minutes ago for his morning run. Lui had been receiving more harassment from fans about his lack of videos. So, of course, he was in a particularly grumpy mood. Human beings could only take so much, after all.
"You okay, Lui? You seem stressed." Evan gazed at his boyfriend with concern, finishing off the last of his water bottle before grabbing a small hand towel to wipe the sweat from his face and neck. Lui ignored how good he looked in the tight garments that wrapped around his muscles perfectly. He was too angry.
"No, fans are harassing me about uploading again." Lui huffed. He stood to get dressed. Evan raised his brow in question.
"That's nothing new." For some reason, that comment just made Lui angrier.
"Well, its your fault. If we weren't together, I could be at home getting shit done instead of here, letting my fans hate me. Because of you." The rant was out before Lui could even process them himself. To Evan, it was like a punch to his gut.
"You really believe that? Fuck you, Lui! You weren't uploading even before we even started talking as more than friends. Take some goddamn responsibility for yourself once and a while!" Evan snapped. Hurt was clear in his expression, in his words. Lui regretted saying what he did. He knew it wasn't true. None of this was Evan's fault. It was all his own, but he didn't want to believe his fans were beginning to hate the person he was becoming.
"Evan.. I didn't-"
"I'm going to head out for another run. While I'm out, why don't you just get your things and go back home. You won't have to worry about me holding you back." Evan's voice trailed off as he spoke. He avoided eye contact with Lui as he grabbed his phone and left without another word.
Lui's throat was thick, his chest heavy. He couldn't help but think he'd just single-handedly ruined one of the best things that ever happened to him. Reluctantly, he did as told. He forced back his tears in the process. Lui walked out to the Uber just as Evan was returning up the sidewalk. Lui noticed the puffiness of his cheeks and the bloodshot eyes. Evan had been crying. As Evan got closer, he didn't even spare Lui a glance. Sauntering up the path to his front door, slamming it behind him; Lui couldn't get a word in.
Days slowly passed, and each was agonizing for Evan. He missed Lui. His short, giggly boyfriend had been his world. Even though he hadn't spoken to the squeaker, he noticed Lui update videos here and there. It hurt Evan to think Lui actually believed Evan was the reason for all of it.
"Cheer up, Ev!" Delirious whined through a Skype call one night. Evan hadn't really been putting much focus into recording, and his friends had noticed. Since Delirious was the only friend he told of his secret relationship with Lui, Jon took it upon himself to call him separately and let him talk.
"Was it my fault? I mean, now that we aren't together, he's been uploading and interacting with fans. Maybe I was holding him back." Evan rested his chin on his hand, frowning slightly. Jon's bright eyes stared back at him. They used facecam in Skype with each other before. It wasn't new to Evan. Jon sighed.
"Babe!" The shout from Jon startled Evan to look at the screen. Evan heard heavy footsteps through the speakers before he heard muffled talking.
"Hi Tyler." Evan mumbled as the tall giant that was Jon's boyfriend, and one of his best friends, sat down next to Jon.
"Hey bud. Don't feel like this is your fault, alright?" Tyler went right into the peptalk they all knew Evan needed. "Have you thought maybe Lui realized how irresponsible he'd been and is trying to make up for it? We all know he doesn't think you were holding him back, Evan."
"How do you two do it? Handling your channels and your relationship."
"We just do, man." Tyler grinned, slinging his arm around the smaller man at his side. Jon laughed and shook his head.
"It's a hassle, and its hard to get used to at first. Then you get into a routine, and you learn to balance YouTube and seeing each other. And maybe it helps that Tyler proposed last night and is moving in with me." Jon spoke, giggling at the shock on Evan's face. Tyler smiled, picking up Jon's left hand to show the silver band on his ring finger.
"I'm happy for you guys." Evan said with his first real smile since the fight he had with Lui.
"We know. Now talk to Lui and sort this shit out so we can be happy for you." Evan sighed at Tyler's words.
"Just talk to him, Ev. He misses you, too." With that, Jon hung up the call, leaving the heartbroken boy to his relentless thoughts.
Despite his friend's advice, Evan didn't talk to Lui. In fact, he never even spoke his name. He forced himself back into recording and making videos for his channel. That didn't mean Lui hadn't tried. About two weeks after the fight, Lui started texting and calling Evan. Evan couldn't bring himself to answer. Lui's words cut him deep. He expected Lui to give up eventually, to move on with his life. And he believed it until Lui showed up on his doorstep.
"Can we please talk?" Lui asked, rubbing his hands together nervously. Evan hesitated. After a few awkward seconds of silence, he opened the door wider and motioned for Lui to enter. Both men sat on the couch, not knowing exactly where to go from there. "I'm sorry. Fuck, Evan, I really said some things I didn't mean. You've never held me back, if anything, you supported me and pushed me forward. After our, um-.. fight, it was major reality check for me. I know I hurt you with what I said, and I promise I didn't mean it. I started uploading more because I wanted to better myself, for my fans and for you. I know I never really took responsibility before, but I am now. I'm making my channel better, myself better, and I want to fix our relationship. If... if we still have a relationship?" Lui questioned hesitantly at the end of his little spiel. Evan forgave him the moment it happened, but it was refreshing to hear this from him.
"I still want a relationship with you, Lui." Evan spoke softly, taking Lui's hand in his. Lui's heart leapt and he lurched forward. His other arm slung around Evan's neck, their lips meeting in a deep and much needed kiss. Evan pulled his lover closer. Evan's large hands trailed over Lui, burning him through his clothes and sending heat through him entirely. "I missed you." Evan huffed against his lips before his tongue delved in. Lui moaned into his mouth, his hands gripping Evan's hair. Evan pulled back with swollen lips and half lidded eyes. Lui knew he looked the same, if not worse. If the devilish smirk Evan was giving him was any indication, Lui knew exactly where this was going. Well, where both men wanted it to go. Sadly, the annoying Skype tone interrupted and halted their actions. Lui whined impatiently. Evan just chuckled and answered the call, seeing all his usual friends on the screen.
"Did you hear us?? Tyler and Jon are getting married!" Marcel squealed.
"I already knew." Evan huffed, aggravated that his reunion with Lui was interrupted by information he knew before anyone else. "I'm kinda busy. Congrats again guys."
"Wait, Evan, did you-" that was when Lui interjected, of course confirming Jon's unfinished question in the form of an adorable childlike voice that made Evan's heart melt.
"Can I be the ring boy?!"
