The back of my throat burns so I part my lips to release the smoke. I can’t hold back my coughs. I try to be quiet so I cover my mouth with my sleeve. Jack’s fingers take the joint away from me. I watch his pink lips wrap around the rolling paper and take a hit.
His beautiful green eyes disappear in a cloud of smoke. The smell surrounds me and I smile in warmth. The sweet, mellow scent pulls us closer. The joint is placed back between my fingers.
“I didn’t take you as a weed kind of guy, Jack,” I say through the hazy feeling swirling in the back of my skull.
“I’m not,” he chuckles, “But while I’m in California… I might as well.”
I nod my head and suck in more smoke. I’ve only done this a few times before, but never alone with a guy. We’re standing in the patio area outside of Grace’s home, surrounded by dead plants and empty bird feeders. The glass doors behind us are covered by the drapes and we’re trying to be as secretive as possible.
Jack told me that he isn’t worried about people being uncomfortable with us smoking; he’s worried about people joining us and “sharing” the joint.
“So did anything exciting happen today?” he asks over my coughs.
I shake my head instantly, “Depends on what you define as exciting. I thought meeting your identical twin brother was quite fun.”
He smiles at me and I can’t breathe. He steps in closer and holds out his hand, waiting for me to pass the joint. I look up and examine his stern, adorable face. The thought of lying to him makes my chest tighten. But I’m not lying… I’m just avoiding the fact that I had hot sex with his big brother before I came to the party.
“Yeah, I still feel really bad about leaving you. You just looked so peaceful in your sleep, and…”
“And it might have been awkward if you woke me up. Right?”
“Yes!” he laughs admittedly, “I’m really glad you’re here. I didn’t want things to end with me leaving you after a drunken night in a hotel.”
“I’m happy to see you too, Jack. Do you remember much from last night?”
Jack’s eyes stare at me with concentration and the tone in his voice changes, “I remember seeing you at the bar. You looked so out of place in that club, I couldn’t help but notice you.”
“What do you mean I looked out of place?” I giggle at the unhinged feeling spreading throughout my limbs.
“You weren’t wearing a dress that was too tight, or wearing makeup that was too heavy. You just looked…” Jack buries his fists in his pockets and stares at his feet, “Cute.”
“Jack,” his name slips out of my mouth, drawing his eyes up from his feet and to my face.
He waits for me to say something, but what do I say? I’m completely lost for words. My mind is being drained of all thoughts, and my body feels numb. He leans forward and holds my face between his hands. Our bodies pull together and his lips brush against mine. I hold my breath and grab onto the front of Jack’s sweater.
His lips are just as soft as I remember. His touch is awakening. I can feel one of his hands wrap around my body and press into my lower back, pushing our hips together. His other hand moves down to my chest and I moan into the kiss. My hand trails down and I feel the growing bulge in his jeans.
I can hear the sound of the patio doors sliding open. My spaced-out mind somehow manages to pull myself away from Jack. He turns away from the doors and starts to smile in the darkness. Finn steps out onto the patio, looking at me with furrowed eyebrows.
“Ash,” he holds up my cell phone that I left on the counter, “You Aunt’s on the phone. There’s been an accident.”
