The clock tower chimed to mark midday. The bell rings echoed throughout the streets of Insomnia, undisturbed by the crowds of people and packed traffic. Everyone was very much awake, busy with their daily business and hurrying about to get things done before the rest of the daylight hours slipped between their fingers.
Cordia sighed softly as she glanced upon the city through the high window. Taking her hand from the glass, her shoulders fell a little when she noticed she'd left marks on the window and rubbed at it with her sleeve- she'd be scolded for days if she was a cause of mess.
Stepping back from the window, she turned her head back to the door on the other side of the wide corridor. He hadn't stirred all morning, and she wondered if he ever would, at this rate.
Crossing the corridor and rapping her knuckles against the white wood of the door, she got no response. Throwing one last glance over her shoulder at the deserted hallway, Cordia turned the brass handle and crept into the room.
The pale curtains were still drawn, and the room was cast into a dark shade of beige, blocking out the sun's long reaches. Sure enough, upon distant inspection, she spotted a streak of black against the white bed sheets and pillows, seeing only his tuft of hair over the top of the feather duvet.
Pacing to the windows, she drew back the curtains in a few quick tugs, and as soon as an inch of light crept into the room, she heard a low groan from behind her and before she could turn to see him, he was retreating further under his blankets until there was nothing but a few strands of black hair peeking out against the pillow.
"Now, now," she called, making her way to the bed and tugging gently at the blanket. His grip was deathly. "Your Highness, you've slept in 'till midday. It's time to get up."
There was an incoherent mumble from under the blanket.
"Noctis," she repeated, this time with a sterner tone, "Your father's been asking for you."
"Why?" he asked, from what she could make out of his grumbles.
"I didn't ask." was her answer, "But I simply told him you were sleeping. I've avoided him all day so I didn't have to come wake you, but it's getting a little ridiculous."
There was a brief, few moment pause, before he finally sighed, and let her draw back the blankets. He threw an arm over his eyes and scowled to the light. Slowly but surely, he eased his arm away from his face and blinked rapidly.
He sat up slowly as she returned to the bed with a silver tray and set it upon his lap. He picked at his food for a while, not really eating anything, and more like playing with it. She watched him the whole while with a twitching eyebrow, knowing that even if he had the gall to complain about it being cold, she couldn't argue back and say it was his fault. Damn royalty.
"It's cold." he grumbled.
She sighed inwardly.
His eyes flashed up to her. "You have permission to speak freely, we're alone." he reminded.
"It's only cold because you ignored me when I tried to wake you up a few hours ago when it was fresh and warm." she ranted, before letting out a wheeze of a sigh and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. She clasped her hands back together, composed again. "Would you like me to bring you something warm?"
