It was the screams that woke me. Far off in the distance yet, closer than before. They get closer every day. Soon it will be my turn. I wonder if I will scream this year?
I hear a wheep from the cell across from mine.
"It's okay Ella!" I call to her "It's going to be okay!"
"No it won't" She sobs "It will never be okay!"
I walk to the bars and wrap my hands around the frozen metal columns. I hear shuffling across from me.
"Alex?" She is scared. I hear it in her voice. I'm scared too, but I don't let her hear it. "What if," she pauses to wheep. "What if it hurts too much?"
I know how painful it is and I know what will happen, and I also know she already knows. There is no remotely good way to respond to that so I just ask "So, do you have any plans for free hour on Friday?"
"No." Her voice is small.
"Do you wanna come with me and Drew to look for escapes?" I ask hopeful.
"Alex! You know it will never happen! We're stuck here with no way out!" She sounds tired and depressed as well as annoyed.
"Come on! It's still possible! Please Ella?"
"Fine"
I hear more shuffling and I know our little conversation is over.
