Tristan stopped rubbing my back and I felt him stiffen next to me.

“Are you sure?” I looked at him, “I mean you don’t remember changing so how do you really know?” I sighed and shook my head. I flash goes off behind my eyes. I see a round metallic object point in my face. Then a sudden pain erupts in my side. My eyes snap open and I gasp. “What? What’s wrong?”

“He shot me.”

“What-” I don’t let him finish as I hurry into the house. I know he’s right on my heels so I don’t bother to turn around. I listen intently and hear the soft snores coming from my brother’s room. I hop up onto the counter and raise the right side of my shirt. I notice the pink puckered line immediately. I squinted at it, not believing my eyes. It looked practically healed. I felt his cool fingers brush the scar and looked up to meet his eyes.

“Tell me this has happened to you.”

“Well I heal a little abnormally fast, but never like that.” I pulled my shirt back down and gripped the counter.

“I feel like I’m going to be sick.” Tristan placed his hands on either side of my head and forced me to look at him.

“It’s going to be okay Eleanor.”

“Okay?” I felt the tears well up in my eyes, “I just killed someone!”

“It was self-defence.”

“It was murder.” He pulled me off the counter and hugged me tightly against him. I breathed in his pine scent and held on to him for dear life. I untangled myself from him once my pulse slowed a bit.

“Thanks for coming over.” My heart almost broke when he smiled at me.

“Anytime, seriously.” I smiled back wiped my eyes with the back of my hand.

“You should probably head back, I’m sure your parents are worried.”

“I’m sure they would be if they were here.” I paused and stared at him. “My folks currently live in somewhere in Michigan. They got a job offer out there that they couldn’t pass up, but they let me stay here and live with Aunt Meg because of school.”

“Do they know about Ptah?”

“No, they don’t need to know. I can handle it.” Somehow that just sounded extremely sad. I chewed on my bottom lip.

“I know we just met, and I probably can’t help you with anything. I know I’m probably just a nuisance, but I’m here if you need anything too. Even if it’s just to talk or whatever.” That sounded way less stupid in my head.

“Yeah feel free to come over anytime.” A sleepy voice chimed in. I sprang like cat who just had its tail stepped on. I looked over at my brother standing sleepily in the doorway.
