Grabbing a tray I got in line for a cheese burger for lunch. Kale casually slung an arm over my shoulder.
“You still coming to practice tomorrow?"
"Only if you give me a ride home." He smirked and walked me to our table. “You eating lunch?”
“Nah, I got a club meeting.” I noticed his eyes flicker to Courtney.
“So you giving me a ride or what?”
"What? Oh yeah, sure. See you guys later." He glanced once more at Courtney and walked away. I pushed Courtney's book down forcing her to look at me. She gave me a sad smile and I sighed.
"You should really say something to him." I told her and took a bite into my burger, but she shook her head violently.
"He doesn't like me like that." She stated quietly.
"You don't know unless you ask." She rubbed the heel of her palm against her eyes.
“So where’s Bryn?”
“Um, I think she said something about there being a football practice.” Of course there’s a football practice. I hastily devoured the rest of my burger which caused Courtney to raise an eyebrow. She opened her mouth to say something but rethought it and shook her head.
"New necklace?" She asked sleepily. I nodded numbly, but her eyes squinted in question.
"You sure?" Was I sure? Of course I'm sure it was in a velvet box tied with a red ribbon. I don't put that much effort in putting away jewellery.
"Sorry, it's just, I feel like I've seen it before." She shook her head,
"Never mind, I'm running on caffeine. I don't make sense to myself right now."
"Come on, let's see if we can't snag you a pillow from the nurse for your next class." She smiled sweetly at me and stood up. She rubbed her eyes repeatedly to the point where she ran into someone and they knocked her down flat. I stood across the hallway and watched the scenario play out.
"Shoot, sorry Court." Kale mumbled as he held out a hand to help her up.
"It's fine; I wasn't watching where I was going." She rubbed her eyes and clenched her jaw to keep herself from yawning. It was so cute the way they danced around each other. I was the only one who ever noticed and knew how much they both liked each other. I called Courtney out on it once and she almost passed out from blushing so hard. Kale gathered her books off the ground and held them out to her. She seemed to sway on her feet a little so she leaned against the locker and closed her eyes.
"You okay?" Her eyes opened, she was too tired to even blush at the proximity of Kale's face.
"Tired." She looked at me and I walked over to them,
"I was taking her to the nurse to snatch a pillow." Kale nodded and looked at Courtney again. He placed a hand on her shoulder,
"Take it easy, I need you healthy if I'm ever going to pass that math test." He smirked and began walking down the hallway. Nice way to show you care. I mentally kicked Kale. The bell sounded for next period.
"I'll just sleep on my binder." Courtney said. I nod and make my way toward my next class; History.
