AVERY PEFFERCORN WAS NOT like normal girls; in school or out in public she would wear dresses and skirts, but with her friends—it was baseball jerseys, t-shirts, and jean shorts.
She's had a love for baseball from a young age and her love of baseball was caused by Benny Rodriguez, her best friend.
The two met in 1st grade after Benny almost accidentally hit her with a baseball, but she caught it and threw it back rather quickly; let's just say it hit some random kid Benny was playing with and he could barley breathe. Ever since that incident she became the sandlot's 9th player, the best pitcher in town, and Benny's best friend.
Even though Avery hung out with boys all the time, she was still girly and hated being covered in dirt; unless she was playing baseball. The guys made her feel loved and wanted, even though most of them were iffy about her joining the team—but they excepted having a girl on the team and played as if it was one of the guys.
Avery thought the summer of 1962 would be the same as the years before that, but she was so wrong.
