The Unknowns

Chapter 4

I lay in the wet grass, staring at the clouds. It may be cold, but to me, it’s perfect. I close my eyes as the wind picks up gently. I hear someone stepping on grass. I turn my head to the left, and Anna strolls over, wearing her black combat boots. She smiles at me and sits down next to me, crossing her legs.

“Are you stalking me?” I ask jokingly.

She looks around the field we practiced in just a few days ago. “I always come here. It’s a lot better than being home with nothing to do.”

I’ve come here every single day since she’s shown me it. I don’t tell her that of course. I sit up, and study her boots. “You sure like those.”

“Yep,” She answers, not giving them a single glance.

Her blunt responses always seem to catch me off guard. I pull a piece of grass out of the ground, and pretend to study it. How do I bring up Trent’s offer to help us? She’s been training on her own the whole time, I don’t want her to be offended. Anna isn’t like that though, she would probably enjoy having someone mentor her.

Anna takes the shard of grass from my hand and stares at me. “What’s on your mind?”

“Trent offered to be our coach. I understand if you don’t want to-“

“Alright,” she says, shrugging. She discards the piece of grass on the floor and stands up. I follow suit, but she pushes me back down. I land flat on my butt, shocked.

She closes her eyes, and soon, I see her clay start forming itself into a shape. I watch, and soon I see it shaped as a knife. She opens her eyes and waves it around my face.

“I’m trying to get it to turn from clay to actually look like a replica of a knife. If you look closely, the handle is turning black.”

“Is it possible to turn clay into an actually knife?” I ask. The logic doesn’t make sense, but then again being fireproof and seeing in the dark isn’t very logical.

She nods. “I know, it sounds unrealistic, but I think it can be done. Once we’re fully developed, I think it might work. I want to get the texture right as well. Like when I touch it I can feel the mushy surface of it.”

Her eyebrows go in a V shape, and soon her knife turns into mush. The clay disappears, and soon she’s looking back up at me.

I stand up, and we both walk out of the field, looking at the scenery. I don’t mention anything about what happened yesterday, and she doesn’t mention anything either. We’re soon on Main St, walking by boutiques and a grocery store. Most of the kids from school hang out here, a lot of them work here as well.

As we pass a perfume shop, Anna nudges me. “That’s where I work.”

I shake my head, laughing. She lightly punches me in the shoulder. “What’s so funny?”

“It’s nothing,” I say, still laughing. “It’s just, I’d never think of you as somebody working with perfume, that’s all. I see you working more at a gun shop or something like that.”

“Shut up,” she says, laughing as well.

We keep walking, and soon I see Craig, Carlie, Janice, and Ben walking the opposite of us. Anna doesn’t notice them, she’s too busy staring at shop windows. Carlie sees us first, and at first I thought she was going to just walk past us, but she makes a deal of stopping everyone and stares at us in disbelief.

I glance at Anna and see she has finally tore her eyes away from the windows long enough to see what’s going on. She glances over at me, raising an eyebrow.
