The Unknowns
Chapter 13
"Well?"
Anna and I turn around simultaneously, and see the old lady from the bus standing in front of us. I squint my eyes at her, confused. “You?”
“Were you expecting someone levitating off the ground, and their voice booming through the field?” She responds back, eyebrows raised.
Her long grey hair is in a braid, and her eyes are sparklingly blue, full of life. I turn to my left and see Anna has her left knee on the ground, kneeling to this ancient Unknown. Am I supposed to kneel down to her as well?
“You lack knowledge,” the ancient Unknown says, nodding at me. She juts her chin out, and I suddenly hear voices in my head, sweet voices, giggling voices.
“Child,” one of them say to me, a warm woman’s voice says to me. “Bow down to her, go on.”
All the voices in my head agree with me, and soon I’m finding myself doing what she says. Once I’m in the kneeling position, I feel as if I have no control over myself. I widen my eyes, and then I feel a fire ball appear in my hand, and launch it at Anna.
I open my mouth to scream no, but my mouth won’t even open, not even a noise escapes my lips. The fireball digs into Anna’s arm, and she lets out a high pitch scream of agony. She breaks from her position, and cripples to the ground, grabbing her arm in pain. I see tears already stinging her eyes.
I feel the hold on me lifted, and I run to her, grabbing at her arm to see the wound. I pull her hand away from it, and see a deep circle in her arm, bloody, flesh long gone. She’s staring at me, looking hurt.
I turn my head to look at the ancient Unknown who hasn’t moved from her spot since her arrival. “What did you do?”
“You asked for my help, and I’m giving it to you.”
“You controlled my body and nearly killed her!”
She doesn’t look surprised by my words filled with hate, not in the slightest. She walks over to Anna who is still moaning in pain.
“Your mother and father have gone through worse, deal with it.”
Anna stares at her, and for the first time, Anna’s speechless. I’m not though.”What are your powers?”
She smirks at me. “Ignorance gets you nowhere, but to answer your question, what isn’t my power?”
“What’s your name?”
“Just call me Ancient for now. Nobody shall ever know, not even the kid of Susan and Tobin.”
I give her a dirty look, and then I help Anna up. She looks like she’s going to be sick. She’s holding her arm, giving Ancient a furious look. She stares back at Anna, blinking, and then she throws her hands up in the air, causing Anna to flinch and throw her hands up to her head. She drops to her knees, and looks up at Ancient. “NO!”
I look back and forth, and see that Ancient is trying to get into her mind just like she did with me. Anna fights back, shouting out words, and then she starts throwing her clay balls at Ancient. A clear shield is formed around her, Anna’s clay balls pathetically bouncing off of it.
“Such a pity that they wasted their powers on you,” Ancient says, her voice emotionless.
“At least I’m able to control myself,” Anna spits out, shaking with rage.
I feel a tingle go up my spine, like electricity, and then I hear the voices again, egging me to hurt Anna again. “Just one fireball to the chest,” it whispers excitedly.
