The Unknowns

Chapter 15

I wake up, my body tangled in unappealing ways, and certainly not comfortable. Once I got into the guest bed last night, I realized how small it actually was. It’s the size of a bottom or top bunk bed. It’s freezing too. I could literally see my breath in the air. I had only one blanket, and it didn’t even go pass my knees. I don’t care though, because I’m not alone, and it beats being in the woods. I get up from my bed, the floorboards creaking under my weight. I open the door to the hallway, and poke my head out to see if Ancient is walking around. She isn’t in sight, so I close my door quietly, and look in the refrigerator for something to make. I see a carton of orange juice, some yogurt, a lot of eggs, and fruit. I open one of the compartments in the fridge, and see it filled with meat, and the other one is filled with vegetables. I decided to make her a vegetable omelet, a few pieces of bacon, and some orange juice since it’s the only thing to drink in there besides water.

I’m not that great at making bacon, and I’m pretty good at omelets because it’s Pam’s favorite, so the food should be a little bit better than edible. I check the clock and see it’s seven fifteen in the morning. I slept in since I didn’t hear Anna’s alarm this morning. I hear the front door open, and then Ancient walks in with a navy blue scarf wrapped around her neck carrying a knitted bag. If you just glanced at her, you’d think she’s a frail old lady, but she has that look in her eyes, the knowledge, the fierceness, things like that.

She smiles and says good morning. She pulls yarn out of her bag, and knitting needles. Just what an old lady would have in her bag.

“I figured I’d let you sleep in today because of everything you’ve been through,” She says, glancing in my direction as she pulls out yet another scarf, but this one is knitted.

“Thank you. Breakfast is almost ready. I just need to know where your plates are.”

Ancient points to a cabinet in the far right of the kitchen. I open it, and inside are only a few plates. Enough for one or two people at the most. I pull two medium sized plates and two glass cups out of the cabinet and place them on the counter. I put an omelet on her plate and a few strips of bacon. She thanks me, and pours herself a glass, and then sits down at what I’m guessing is “her chair”. I make myself an omelet, and then I sit beside her.

“What’s on the agenda today?”

Ancient thinks for a moment, and then points up to the roof. “You can fix my leaky roof.”

“I’m being serious. What do you want to teach me first?”

“I am being serious, very serious. I told you I’d teach you the lessons of being an Unknown and lessons on being a human.”

I honestly don’t think it’s necessary to study human lessons, but who am I to question Ancient? She has a reason for everything, and every now and then, she lets me know the reason behind the lesson.

Ancient opens a supply closet filled with yarn and such. She pulls out a red tool box, and hands it to me. She gives me the fundamentals on fixing a roof, and then she sends me off. I’ve never been outside of this house before, and seeing it’s not an illusion, and there are actually kids outside, it’s surprising.

I find the ladder on the side of the house, and climb up. I take my first step on the hazardous roof, and go over to where Ancient says the leaking is at. I begin fixing it, hoping this doesn’t take too long. Ancient has to help me with some sort of Unknown training today. A few minutes go by, and then I notice a girl is looking up at me from the ground. I stop, and look down at her. She’s around my age, her cheeks rosy. She’s in top to bottom pink winter clothing. She smiles at me. “Hi.”
