The Unknowns
Chapter 12
“What “rumors” are they talking about?” Anna asks loudly, throwing her hands up in the air as we walk outside. “What are we out of the loop about now?”
I run a hand through my hair. What are we out of the loop about? I see Anna pacing back and forth outside, while I feel hopeless inside. We both aren’t done with feeling sorry for ourselves, but we need to get on top of what’s on our plates.
“So, we kill Keegan-“I begin saying.
“Wait, wait! Why?”
“You heard him back there, he wants us dead, and I don’t think we’re going to have time to explain ourselves to him before he kills us.”
Anna doesn’t reply, instead she stares past me, her brown eyes narrowing. I turn around and I see Keegan’s sister walking out of the lobby, followed by Keegan. They see us staring, and they share a look, both of them silently asking each other if they should kill us right now or wait until later.
“Any more obvious, much?” Anna spats out in a whisper, her voice filled with hatred toward his sister. I don’t know what it is about her that drives Anna crazy.
I grab her arm, and tell her there are too many people around for us to have a confrontation. She reluctantly says okay, but if we wait too long, they’ll kill us without us even knowing. I reassure her that we’ll talk to them soon.
We walk to the supermarket to get newspapers and lots of water and sugary candy. We need lots of energy today to find a field, and to research this “rumor” that we know nothing about. We head to the local book store, and then we head straight to the science section. There’s got to be a book here about us.
“Remember when I said there wasn’t a book about us since I looked high and low for one?” Anna begins saying, her finger stopping on a hardcover book, “Well, I may be wrong.”
She pulls it off the shelf, and I lean in as she opens in. It’s a book about things besides humans, like aliens, animals that people claim they saw, animals that don’t exist and such, things like that. Anna flips through the pages, and then stops on a chapter right after aliens, and I see a picture of a person with electricity coming out of their hands.
“What the heck is this?” I hiss, pointing at the picture.
“It’s real,” Anna gasps. “But-but how did the Unknowns not kill this writer? Everything in here is true.”
We look at the publisher, and the publisher’s company is something we never heard of. We look for more, but we don’t see any more copies of the book.
“This book isn’t popular,” I state.
She nods, and then she takes it to the counter to purchase it. The guy working the counter raises his eyebrow at the book, and says he’s never seen this book before. We don’t answer, and then after it’s in the shopping bag, we hurry back to the hotel. We run up the stairs, and then hurry into the hotel room, both of us heading straight for the couch. Anna pulls the book out of the bag, and then she opens it back to the page we were on.
“’The only thing these “people” fear is their arch-enemies, people who hunt down their people,’” Anna quotes the book, her eyes scanning the pages. “Whoever wrote this had to know an Unknown.”
I wrinkle my eyebrows as I read the next page in the book. They all have powers that could take over the world, kill every human on this earth. They were once like us, but as they grew up, they became different, more powerful, as if they were infected. They are the closest thing we have to superheros, but only when it comes to their powers, not saving the world. All they care about is keeping their family safe, and destroying their enemies. Do they care about humans? No, they do not.
