The Unknowns

Chapter 16

As the day nears to following the Hunters, my powers are becoming stronger than ever. The pain I had to go through to get here though, was excruciating. I take a breath, and then I walk into the house, and see Anna sitting on the ground, mediating. I push her to the ground as I go by, getting an annoyed sigh from her. I sit down across from Wally, who looks like he’s been through a tragedy.

“What’s wrong?” I ask, trying to think of something to say, but falling flat.

Wally smiles at me, the edges of his eyes wrinkling, “Just tired of all of this.” The Hunters need to be stopped, and when I mean that, I mean like I want them gone.”

Maybe we could start an army and fight them off. I don’t say anything, because if the Unknowns could fight against the Hunters, we would’ve already. That’s another thing, how outnumbered are we?

Terry walks in, carrying a load of laundry. As she walks by Anna, she pushes her over. Anna stands up, and throws her hands in the air. “Seriously? Is it seriously necessary to knock me over?”

“Yes” We all chorus.

She rolls her eyes at us, and then heads into the guest room we’re sleeping in. She returns a few minutes later, her hair in a bun. We make sure everything is packed, our breaths silent. I pack a few pieces of clothing, food, and the money. I make sure Ancient’s note is tucked away, and then I look at Anna.

“Are you ready?”

She looks over at me, her brown eyes twinkling. “Born for this, remember?”

I laugh, and then I stand up. I thank Terry and Wally for their hospitality, and then I take Anna’s hand. I squeeze it confidently, and then we head out. We run over to the Unknown’s house, and then we find a spot to hide. The Hunters will take them tonight, and by my watch it’s going to be nine soon. I find a bush big enough for two in the backyard, and hide behind it. I beckon Anna over. She looks at the house, and then starts heading to the backyard to sit next to me. The bush faces the back of the house, which is probably not the best spot, but if we’re going to be sneaky, this is the best option.

“What time are they going to come?” I ask, getting to my knees.

“Um, I don’t know.”

We sit for a while, and when I check my watch it blinks that it’s midnight. Anna is lying on her side, propping her head up with her hand. At twelve fifteen I hear the sound of a door opening. I peek behind the bush, and then I start crawling. Anna’s right behind me, and when we get to the front of the house, we see that the door is wide open.

They’re here. I grab Anna’s hand, and pull her to the side of the house, our backs pressed against the house. I hear a murmured scream inside, and then things falling. I want to save the Unknowns, but I need them to help me get to headquarters.

People walk out of the house, and I slowly creep around to look. I see the Hunters carrying a man and woman out, followed by two pre-teens. So many of them, Hunters I mean. How are we going to be able to follow them without one of them seeing us?

Anna and I watch them head off into the woods, and then a millisecond later, we follow. We try to sound noiseless, but it’s difficult. Once we get into the woods, we don’t see them anywhere. No, we couldn’t have lost them! I look up toward the sky to see if they flew away, but there isn’t a bird in sight.

I hear a gurgled yell far away, and Anna and I run toward it. We see the Hunters dragging the Unknowns, and then the Hunters start transforming into birds. No!
