The Unknowns

Chapter 10

“We’re here!” Anna sings as we take our first steps into Kansas. I turn to her, giving her a coy smile. She returns a grin from ear to ear as if this is the happiest place on earth.

“So we’re going to stay here until we figure out a pattern?” I ask her, both of us walking alongside each other.

“Yep. I don’t know how many more times I have to tell you. We could be here for years, so might as well get used to the peacefulness of everything. I was looking up hotels at the library and there’s one that I think we’re going to like.”

She points to a street sign, and comments that we’re almost there. As we’re walking, I decide to start up a conversation that may or may not get Anna in a bad mood. “Is this a lot easier than it was when you were younger?”

Map in hand, she looks at me curiously. “Of course it was. I couldn’t stay in hotels, and I didn’t have as much money as we do now. What we’re going to do here is train some more and make this our temporarily base-“

“I know I know,” I say in mock frustration. She kicks me in the ankle, and we both jog the rest of the way to our new home.

I see a big hotel building, the biggest one yet. She takes my hand, and we both go through revolving doors, and are greeted by a young woman in uniform. There aren’t sleazy any people at the front desk that reek of smoke and alcohol.

“Hello,” the woman says cheerfully.

“Hi. I have a reservation. It’s room sixty.”

The lady nods and starts typing on her computer. “Is it under Miles?”

Anna nods. She hands the woman some cash.  The woman nods, and then asks for an ID, and Anna gives it to her. After a while, the young woman hands us the key and says to enjoy ourselves. We go in an elevator, and soon I see Anna sliding the key to our room.

She opens the door, and immediately I fall in love with it. There’s a good size kitchen fully made of granite. A dishwasher too. There’s a washer and dryer to the right, and an ironing board. A couch with no holes in it is sitting across from a television set that looks up to date, and there are two rooms. I get my own bed!

“How much does this cost a night?”

Anna, who is putting some of our food in the refrigerator, laughs. “Don’t worry about it, I’m handling the money. Did you know they have a computer room downstairs for us, and a heated pool for us to exercise in? The gym is pretty massive too.”

“Anna, is this a vacation for you?” I joke as I open a sliding door to look at the view.

There’s not much to see, so I go back inside, shutting the glass door tightly. I continue on to look at the rooms. They’re pretty big, and thankfully the beds look nicely done.

“I told them to not let the maids in. I don’t feel comfortable with people coming and going in here as they please,” Anna says, already heading to the bathroom.

I look at the closets and see there are complimentary robes. I put one on, and I have to admit, it’s soft.  I walk around with it on, figuring I can shower when she gets out. I get a bottle of water and a granola bar and eat, my stomach yearning for a more proper meal.

Soon Anna gets out of the shower and I ask if her if we can get some groceries. She’s about to answer me, but stops when she sees me in my robe. She covers her mouth with her hand, her body shaking with laughter.

“What?” I ask, looking down at it. “It’s comfortable.”

“Just get in the shower so we can go grocery shopping. We can pick up some newspapers as well.”
