The Unknowns

Chapter 11

Anna knocks on the hotel door, and I let her in. She grabs a root beer from the fridge, pops the cap open, takes a long drink, and then a burp escapes her lips. She points to the door, her hair tangled up from half sleeping half spying on the Unknown boy. She slept in the hallway just in case he tried to sneak out.

"His TV is blasting in there," she says, propping herself on the countertops. "You can go ahead and spy, but I don't think he'll be going anywhere anytime soon."

I sigh and nod at her. I head outside with some newspapers, and lean against the railing of the hallway, looking out at the view. If Trent was here, I know for a fact he would love it. He'd get a chair and sit out here and just stare out. He would get to know all the people around here and go over to their houses for barbecues and for parties. Oh and Pam would simply gasp at this place. This would be the dream area she'd want her kids to live in.

I'd have cousins. Maybe they'd even have powers. I could teach them everything they needed to know and reassure them that they are indeed not monsters. I hear the sound of the boys' door opening, and then a woman appears in the doorway, wearing a red dress and high heels. She's yawning and running a hand through her light brown hair. When she sees me staring, she winks at me, and then takes the elevator down to the lobby.

I look back at his door, and then I'm about to knock when I see the woman didn't fully close the door, leaving it open for me to go inside. I should get Anna and come back, but something tells me this is going to be my only chance to get in.

I tentatively open the door, nearly swearing at myself when it starts making a squeaking noise. Luckily the boy doesn't come out from anywhere, shooting powers at me. Just in case though, I look around, making sure he isn't spying on me from anywhere. I hear the sound of the shower going, so it gives me time to look. As I look around, I nearly stop in my tracks. There are newspapers everywhere, the exact same newspapers as the ones in our hotel room. I bend down to get a closer look to see if he marked them, but before I could get a good look, I hear the sound of the shower go off. I reluctantly look around, and then I'm about to run, but the boy is already padding toward me. He'll most definitely hear me now if I run off, but if I don't think he'll catch me. I'll have to outrun him.

I run and throw open the door, not bothering to close it. In seconds, I hear feet running behind me, and I turn a corner to start running down the stairs. I hear feet behind me, but he's much slower than I am. When I see my hotel room, I pound at the door. I hear the boy running down the last few steps of the stairs. When I see the door start turning that leads to this hallway, I feel Anna pull me in, and she slams the door.

She's about to ask me what's wrong, but I put a finger to my lips to silence her. I look through the peephole and see the boy stop in his tracks and look around. Anna nudges me, and then she takes a look. She leans back and stares at me, raising an eyebrow.

"What is he doing?" She mouths to me curiously.

I look back through the keyhole and see he's walking back up the stairs to his room. I sigh in relief, back away from the door, and sit down on the couch. She follows me.

I tell her what happened, and nearly get a slap from her. "You nearly got us caught! He's probably going to leave and then we won't be able to stalk him!"

I hold up my hands to stop her. I tell her about the woman and how he probably thinks it was her. She shakes her head, refusing to listen. She starts ranting, but I grab her and keep trying to reassure her. She gives me a dirty look and says I'm such a liar, and the whole time we're trying to talk over each other.
