Millie turns for the 100th time within two hours. The sleep won’t come. She knows it’s hopeless ‘cause she’s been through this loads of times by now. Her thoughts and the voices are haunting her as always. There’s nowhere to find peace except in death and she wishes for that to come pretty often. It takes all she has inside of her to fight it off. Maybe she should call Jessica back now and hope she won’t be able to tell that something’s off. The guilt hits her again like a big wave hitting a ship during a big storm. She almost throws up. Guilt is a strong, sometimes consuming, feeling but after a few second the voices take over and the guilt is suppressed. She stands and head for the kitchen to get some water. Being in the kitchen is not a good idea. There are so many knives in there and the voices love it. They want her to hurt herself again.
Millie reaches for a knife but is literally saved by the bell. Who could that be? She makes sure her shirt covers the wounds on her arm and heads towards the door. Before she can open it, it swings open. Her parents walk in. Her mom looks at her and says
“What took you so long? We don’t have forever.”
It’s the way her mom always acts toward her. No "Hello" or "How are you?" It’s just straight on to a problem or something that displeases her. Millie sighs and says
“Hello mother. Hello father. I hope you had a nice flight. When are you leaving again?”
Her father gives her a quick look and says
“Hello Millie. We leave for China in two days.”
Her parents are both really great doctors and they practiced until a few years ago. Then they quit so they could teach others all over the world how to become great doctors.
This means that they travel a lot. Millie hates that they are never home but she would never tell them that because if she did then she would just get a lecture from her mom about how selfish she is if she thinks they should go back to working at a hospital and thereby be prevented from helping turning a lot of people into great doctors. Her parents love to be in charge and be leaders. Millie doesn’t feel that way. She just wants to be blend in and be as invisible as possible.“For how long?”
Millie asks quietly and for the 100th time she wonders why she couldn’t have normal parents who miss their daughter when they are away and who aren’t away all the time.
“We will be back the 26th of December.”
Her father pronounces and Millie’s mouth hits the floor. For the second year in a row she has to be alone for Christmas. What kind of parents are they? Furthermore it’s now the 27th of November so this time they’ll be gone for almost an entire month. Millie groans.
“You guys do know you’re gonna leave me here all alone for Christmas again, right?”
