The term dandere (だんデレ ) comes from the Japanese word "danmari" (黙り) which means silence, so a dandere character is someone who is quiet and a bit antisocial. Danderes are often scared to embarress themselves by saying the wrong thing, so they tend to say nothing to stay on the "safe side". However, once befriended, danderes usually come out of their shell and become cute and happy, especially with the ones they love.

Great examples of dandere characters are Hinata Hyuuga  from "Naruto", Kotomi Ichinose from "Clannad", Mio Akiyama from "K-On!", Japan from "Hetalia Axis Powers", Umi Sonoda from "Love Live! School Idol Project", Tsukasa Hiiragi from "Lucky Star", Shin-Ah from "Akatsuki no Yona", and Ito Hikiotani from "Punch Line".
