The term tsundere (ツンデレ) comes from the Japanese word "tsuntsun" (ツンツン) which means to look away in disgust or to be aloof, so tsuderes are shown to be stuck up on the outside, but loving on the inside. Tsunderes are usually embarrassed by their romantic feelings and treat the one they love poorly, mainly because they dont't know how to react to their feelings. Tsundere characters easily get upset and flustered, possibly cause physical harm to the one they love, and then call them stupid.

Great examples of tsundere characters are Asuka Langley from "Neon Genesis Evangelion", Kyou Sohma from "Fruits Basket", Germany from "Hetalia Axis Powers", Toosaka Rin from "Fate/Stay Night", Kallen Stadtfeld from "Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch", and Aisaka Taiga from "Toradora".
