The term yandere (ヤンデレ) comes from the Japanese word "yanderu" (病んでる) meaning mentally or emotionally ill. A yandere character starts out as someone nice and sweet, but eventually becomes obsessive over the one they love, stalking them, fearing that someone will take the one they love. Yanderes will do anything to try to prevent anyone to get close to their love intrest, even murder.
Great examples of yandere characters are Kotonoha Katsura from "School Days", Lindo from "Dance with Devils", Mika Harima from "Durarara!", Lucy from "Elfen Lied", Yuno Gasai from "Mirai Niki", and Rolo Lamperouge from "Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2".
