Chapter Twenty

"Where were you?" My mom shouted at me as I stood in the darkened yard in front of Micah's house. Her eyes were red and teared up.

"I got dared to go in the woods and it was dark and I hit my head on a rock and woke up and ran straight up here. I lost total track of time, I thought it was only seven when I came up here." I told her with fear struck across my face which made her believe me, but she was angry. I put myself in the truck and on the way home it was mostly silent until the end of the drive.

"You're not allowed to go over there anymore." She told me angrily.

"Why? They didn't do anything wrong!" I exclaimed in rage.

"You shouldn't have walked down the street, you obviously have no supervision over there, and they put you in dangerous situations. I was terrified tonight!" My mom screamed at me.

"Mrs. Clouse always supervises us! It was stupid, I know! I won't do it again, I promise!" I exclaimed beginning to cry. Micah's cult was the last thing I had to help Lucas and I ruined it!

"I know you won't, because you won't have the chance." She told me looking at the dark road.

"I hate you. That's my best friend." I said crying for a guilt trip.

"You should have thought about that." She told me.

"I know." I lied. I just wanted to go back. I knew it really wasn't my fault that I 'fell on a rock and blacked out'. I really didn't know what happened... It seemed like everything that happened was in one time period. I couldn't put it together.

We pulled up to the house and I slept for four more hours and then got up for school. I wasn't allowed to skip since I was 'irresponsible' I had to pay for the consequences. I wore baggy skinny jeans and a hoodie today. I looked pretty disgusting besides my hair that always looked fabulous. I walked into the kitchen and poured me a glass of milk and I heard my mom shuffle from the bedroom.

"I'm sorry I was so hard on you last night. I just really love you and I can't stand to see my baby get taken. It worried me to death. You could have died out there or been stuck in a coma for all I knew." She told me rubbing my shoulder caringly. I nodded and put my cup in the sink.

"So can I still go over there?" I asked.

"I'm discussing it with your dad, but not this week." She told me.

"Mom, but, I have too!" I told her quickly.

"Why?" She asked.

"Yearbook project." I lied. "It's due really soon and Micah is such a procrastinator. I was supposed to come over and finish it last minute with him this week." I told her with wide eyes.

"Well that's it then. No more going over there for a while." She told me.

"Okay." I groaned annoyed and then went outside where my cousin was parked waiting for me in my long downhill gravel driveway.

"So how'd it go?" Lucas asked a little perkier than he had been lately. I bit the side of my cheek nervously.

"I'm not sure. I had to do that initiation thing, you know? Well, I was put into the woods with a radiation detector and it started going crazy right after I brushed paths with a guy in a black hoodie and a mask, well person, I don't know if it's male or female." I rambled scrunching my eyebrows together as I recollected the events. They seemed a bit fuzzy now.

"You saw the mask again?" He asked me looking at me now with fear upon his face. I nodded carefully. "Did he hurt you?" he asked me quickly. I felt warmed by his protectiveness a bit, but annoyed at the same time. I was completely independent.
