Chapter thirty-three
When I came home I was interrogated. I was exhausted and they kept pressing and pressing. I couldn’t help it. I lashed out and threw a coffee mug at Mom. I’m sorry, I’m sorry… I can feel myself slowly draining. I had been through a lot lately. I needed a break. They bought me a drug test. I came out clean but that doesn’t stop their ignorant ideas. They say I’m hanging out with the wrong crowd. They say I’m too tense. I just need to get away from them.
The police interrogated me too. Micah and Declan just had to drop my name on the discovery of Gabby’s body as well. The body we saw, well it was nowhere to be seen when they came for it. It was like it never existed. No blood, no skin, nothing. You’d think a rotting corpse would have left behind some trace. Slenderman made us call wolf. Another reason they think I’m on drugs. We’re the kids who pranked the cops over Gabby’s sudden disappearance. Who’d take the Slenderman geeks seriously? A lot of people called us hateful things afterwards. They couldn’t believe we’d joke about a missing person like that. I know it wasn’t a joke. We know what we saw.
Now I was sitting in Micah’s room to watch the tape. It was just him and me. The rest had already seen it. He glanced over at me to register my facial expression before seeing it. I didn’t look scared, I was just exhausted. It was me at my second birthday party. I blew out the candles. It glitched a little bit and showed a glitch figure. Rapid dates and camera errors appeared. A tall, faceless, ghost white, figure that had the physique of a human stood wobbling in the unsteady camera frame. It was gone in a second. Everyone was smiling and laughing unaware of the figure that had briefly appeared. They were clapping at me for blowing out all my candles. The video ended. “What do you think?” Micah said turning off the television and sitting back down in the chair next to me.
What did I think? I felt disgusted, disturbed even. Two. The solid age of two. I had been in this world for only two years and my fate had been decided. I selfishly thought about all the other people he could have chosen. For the longest time I had thought that if I would have never gotten involved with Micah and his group then I would be happy and healthy. But that wasn’t the case. I had been a victim from the start. I never had a choice.
But all I replied with was, “Well, I’ve been a target for a long, long, time. This I already figured since most targets are stalked without knowing until he wants to make it known. That’s when it’s too late.” I said with no inflection to my voice. Micah nodded. “Do you mind if I lie down for awhile?” I asked.
“I don’t care.” Micah said in his natural rude sounding way. I smiled a small smile and crawled in his bed. “I’m just going to play some League while you do that.” He said turning on his computer. I nodded and drifted away. It was the best sleep I had gotten in awhile. I woke up and let my eyes focus. I inhaled deeply, stretched, and wiped the crust out of my eyes. “Feel better?” He asked
“I do actually.” I said with a smile.
“You’re sick.”
“I know.” I sighed. “What’s there to do?”
“Hang back for awhile until it gets better. Once it’s at a manageable rate we can hang out again. But you’ve been through so much Sigma lately. It’s going to be the death of you if you don’t stay away for awhile.” Micah said. “I’m taking you home.”
“No don’t! I don’t want to go home. I’ve only been here for two hours.” I said in my defense with a sense of panic in my voice.
