Third person POV:

Dan dressed in all black, hated school, and kept to himself. Although he didn't talk to anyone his mysteriousness made every straight girl or gay guy want him. He was the schools heartthrob, no matter how much he didn't want to be. It was safe to say he had a dark heart and a cold soul. He was a punk in every sense of the word. But there is a reason behind his hard personality. His father, his idol, died on Dan's thirteenth birthday two years ago. Dan's mom sleeps around due to the depression caused by losing Mr. Howell. And His older brother left home as soon as he could and never talked to Dan again.

Dan was tired of getting hurt. So he vowed that for the rest of his life and especially his last two years of high school, he wouldn't let anyone get close enough to hurt him.

Dan kept that vow for about a year but it all came crashing down when a boy named Phil rescued his black heart and made it beat again. This is the story of just how Philip did it.

It all started when Phil and his family moved for his father's job. Phil's dad is a multi million dollar business man who works for big corporations.

Phil's family was undoubtedly rich but he as a person never showed it. Philip didn't act as if he was better that anyone else. He was the kindest most generous boy you could ever meet. He was always happy and smiling the day away. He only wore bright pastel colors and flower crowns.

Phil was nervous about his first day at his new school. Starting off in the middle of junior year wasn't ideal. He knew he wouldn't have a hard time making friends though.

Dan was in the back of his first class when Phil walked in. The teacher had him introduce himself to everyone then take a seat. The seat just happened to be right next to Dan.

"Hi, what's your name?" Phil asked the attractive boy he had been sat next to.

At first Dan wasn't going to respond. He had wanted nothing to do with people. But when he looked into Phil's vibrant blue eyes something inside him forced words out. "I'm heartthrob Howell, but you can call me Dan."

"Heartthrob huh? I can see that." Phil winked. He may have looked innocent but he had a flirty side to him.

"You're not so bad yourself." Dan didn't know what had gotten into him. He never acted like that, let alone talked to anyone. His chest felt tight but it was a good feeling.

Dan usually sat by himself at lunch and liked it that way. But that day Phil sat across from him with his food. "Why are you alone?" Phil asked curiously.

"Because I like to be alone."

"Not anymore." Phil stated confidently.

"Oh really?"

"Mhm," Phil smiled his beautiful smile, "now we sit here, together."

Dan didn't say anything. He didn't think he needed to because he knew that Phil would just sit there anyway no mater what Dan said.

"So Dan, do you have a girlfriend?" Phil asked as Dan was drinking.

Dan choked and almost spit out his juice. "First of all, I'm gay. Second of all, I don't usually talk to people. You just caught me on a good day." Dan lied, for some unknown reason he kinda liked talking to Phil.

"You're gay?"

Dan had suddenly got defensive. "Yeah, so what? You have a problem with that?"

"No. I mean it'd be weird if I had a problem with homosexuality."

"What do you mean?"

"I'm gay too."

"Oh,"

For two months Dan and Phil ate lunch together and talked in the three classes they shared. Dan was finnaly opening up to the pastel boy.

"You should come over after school Dan. My family would like to meet you."

"Why would they want to meet me?" Dan questioned.

"Well because you are my best friend." That sentence was the first thing that started the process of warming Dan's cold heart.

"Sure. I'll come over. But only for an hour."

The first thing Dan noticed was how big and amazing Phil's house was. He said he'd only stay for an hour but that hour turned into a few hours. And those few hours turned into the two polar opposites falling asleep together on the couch. Phil's basement always got chilly at night so at some point they cuddled up together for warmth.

The next morning, which happened to be a Saturday, Phil woke up tangled up in Dan's embrace. He unashamedly snuggled in closer to his friend. With his face tucked safely into the crook of Dan's neck, Phil fell back to sleep.

Dan woke up a short time later. He might not have admitted it at the time but that night he had gotten the best nights sleep that he had in ages.

"Phil are you awake?" Dan whispered.

"I am now." Phil sleepily answered then chuckled.

Neither of them pulled away from the other. They laid there until Phil was forced up by his full bladder. As soon as Phil was up both boys missed the warmth.

When Phil came back Dan was moving one of the chairS closer to the couch. "What are you doing?" Phil asked curiously.

"Im gonna build a blanket fort!"

"Oh! Then let me help!"

Daniel and Philip built their fort and spent all day in it. When Dan finally decided he had to leave neither of them really wanted the fun to end.

Dan heart and soul were finally softening up again and for the first time in awhile Dan smiled a genuine smile. "I don't want to go." Dan said sadly.

"Then don't, stay the night again." Phil almost pleaded.

"But I really shouldn't. I don't want to burden your family."

"No way! They love you. And so do I. Besides we have plenty of room."

"Wait. Did you just say..."

"That I love you? Yes. You're my best friend Dan! Of course I love you." Those three words were the straw that broke the camel's back. Well more like what got Dan's heart to figuratively start beating again.

Dan started to tear up a little "I love you too."
