Cadence POV

"Does Lilly ever talk about her family?" I asked Marci as I slid the picture in my pocket.

"No, she keeps that side of her life private," Marci said still digging through boxes.

"I can't believe Lilly never had any children? She is a gorgeous woman and I'm sure she had men fawning over her," I said trying to see if she knew anything.

"She still has men trying to vie for her attention. Even at her age her old clients still want her. Every now and
again she may take them up on their offer."

"I wonder if she has ever been in love?"

Marci turned around and looked at me with a crease on her face. "I'm sure she has. We all have a great love. I thought it was my oldest child's father but I was wrong. I lucked out and it ended up being my husband," she said smiling.

"I just worry about her sometimes," I said. "I'm sure she gets lonely because I do and I hate for her to be all alone."

"I know Cadence, I think about her too. I worry with her being in this big house alone, but she seems happy so I let her be."

I heard my phone go off. I looked down and it was Evan.

"I need to take this Marci." She nodded and I left the room.

"Hello."

"Hey I was calling because I have tickets to the ATL Music Festival next month. I have three tickets for you and your sisters, want to go; my treat?"

"I will go if you let me pay you back for the tickets and I pay for our way."

"Why won't you let me take care of the expenses?"

"Because I work and I can afford it plus I know the festival sold out of tickets on the first day."

I heard him laughing. "I hate to burst your bubble but every hotel is booked and I'm not sure if you will be able to get three airline tickets?"

"Well I guess we won't be going."

"Come on Cadence," I could hear him a little flustered. He sounded like a little boy that wasn't getting his way. It was actually kind of funny and cute.

"I can arrange a private plane to pick you all up and I have a home in Buckhead that is not far from me. I also have a car you can use."

"How long have you been planning this?

"For two weeks," he said. I bet he was smiling on the other end.

"I thought we were taking a break?"

"The hearing is next week. I should know something. I've been a good boy and I need a little fun, Cad."

"I don't want to mess up anything Evan."

"You won't. Please put me out of my misery and come. That is all I am asking for. I miss my friend."

"Haven't you talked to me just about every night?"

"Yea, but I miss seeing your face in person, not on a screen but having you sitting next to me enjoying the moonlight."

"So if I come we will enjoy the moonlight? A candlelight dinner? A movie? A real date?"

"You can have whatever you want, just say the word and you will receive."

"You promise Evan?"

"I promise," he said."

I took a deep breath. "Only if you can get me one more ticket. My sisters don't need to be alone in a strange house in Atlanta while I am galavanting around a city with a handsome man and you have to at least let me pay you back."

"I can get another ticket for your friend and you don't have to pay me back. Just being in your company is good enough or me."

"Evan either let me pay or I'm not coming."

"Fine! Have it your way but you are going to have dinner with me!"

"Okay, that seems reasonable."

"What am I going to do with you?" He said sounding defeated.

"Keep being my shoulder to cry on," I said sitting in the hallway.

"Of course always."

"I gotta go Evan, I will call you later."

"Okay, I will talk to you then, goodbye." We hung up and I put my phone in my pocket. I walked back in the room watching Marci stack the boxes back up.

"Did you find the pictures?"

"Yeah, I did. Thanks for helping."

"No problem Marci. I need to study some of my materials for my class tomorrow so I better go."

Marci walked over to me and gave me a hug. "Okay sweetie. I will see you on Tuesday and we can go through the checklist." Marci and her checklists.

"Okay, I will see you then."

It was Friday morning. No mind blowing sex dreams so I would be fine for the day. The picture still bothered me so I brought it with me to the hospital.

"Cadence this morning you will monitor the ER and I want you to do a patient trace where you will follow a patient from the time of check in until discharge or transfer then you will be attending the cardiology meeting at noon. I would also like you to either attend or listen on the plant ops conference call at two pm," Mr. Barrett said.

After he gave out assignments we disbursed and headed out to our respected destinations. I was glad that David didn't come to morning check-in. Since our last encounter I wasn't sure I actually wanted to face him. I finally made it to the ER. I checked in with the nurse and I told her what I was doing. I just needed to interview a potential. I looked around and took a deep breath. I saw an older guy sitting in the waiting room.

"Hello my name is Cadence Montgomery and I work for hospital administration. Do you mind if I follow you through your visit? We are trying to improve our processes to make this a pleasant experience for you?

The guy looked up. He looked familiar. "James Horton?"

"The one and only. Look at you as pretty as a picture," he said smiling at me.

What are you doing here James?" I said taking a seat next to him.

"I'm a diabetic. My blood sugar was low and my doctor sent me down here."

I use to have the biggest crush on James Horton when I was in middle school and high school, he was the captain of the football and track team. He use to be absolutely gorgeous. Tan skin, muscular built and dark eyes made him dreamy. But know he looked sick. The once dreamy guy now had grey hair and muscles no more.

"I'm sorry to hear that, James."

"I have been living with it for years. I'm use to it. Sure I don't mind you following me. It's nice to have a familiar face here. My wife left me about six months ago, so it's just me."

"Well we are going to take good care of you." I followed James through and took my notes. It didn't take too long before he was seen and released. We had promise to stay in touch but you know how that goes.

I made it to the cardiology meeting. Dr. Jeffries was the chairperson. I listen in and took notes. We ate lunch and after the meeting I stopped Dr. Jeffries.

"Dr. Jeffries can I speak to you in private?"

"Of course Cadence. We can go to my office." We talked about the meeting and how my internship was going. Moments later we reached his office. We were greeted by his office staff.

"Have a seat, Cadence." I looked around and he had pictures and degrees all over the wall. His desk was clean with a few files stacked nice and neatly on the file cabinet.

"What can I do for you?" He sat back in his black leather chair.

"The night I came to see Lilly in the hospital you said I looked like her. What did you mean?"

He looked at me as if he was trying to remember. A small crease formed on his face. His mouth twitched as if he was debating on whether or not to say something.

I pulled out the picture of the young girl and slid it to him. He looked down at the picture and smiled.

"I found that picture in Lilly's attic when Marci and I were looking for items for a get together. I looked at the picture and she does look like me. I feel like I'm staring at myself but in the past. Please tell me I'm not going crazy?"

He looked at the picture and up at me."Lilly lives a very private life, Cadence. You should know that."

"Dr. Jeffries, I feel a kinship to Lilly. When Ben called and told me she was in the hospital, my heart fell. I was so worried I dropped what I was doing and came to the hospital. She has been like a mother to me and I am just trying to figure things out."

"This is her. She was sixteen years old when this picture was taken. I remember because she looked gorgeous that night at the party. Every boy wanted to dance with her including me. She was so shy back then. Her father ruled her life and she obeyed every word he said." Dr. Jeffries smiled.

"You do look a lot like her. Just a shade darker but you two could pass for twins." He shook his head. I pulled out the picture of me at the ball wearing the same dress.

He looked at both pictures. "I'll be damned!" He said looking confused.

"I took this picture almost a year ago. Lilly gave me the dress to wear to an event. I looked at both pictures last night and we could pass for either sister or mother and daughter. The resemblance is undeniable. What do you think Dr. Jeffries?" I was holding my breath.

"Amazing, but Lilly never had children. Maybe you could be a distant cousin by blood. What's your mother or father's name? I knew some Lilly's cousins."

"My mother's name was Diana Parker and my father's name was Thaddeus Montgomery."

"You said was?"

"Yes sir, they both died."

"I'm sorry to hear that. The names don't ring a bell. I'm sorry."

"My mother was adopted when she was a baby. She lived in quite a few foster homes and met my father when she was young. I don't know any other relatives. My mother and father never talked about any."

"So do you think you may be a Monroe?" He asked.

"I wouldn't say that. It's just... I can't even explain it," I said. I really didn't.

"Lilly was an only child as far as I know but who's to say her father didn't have a mistress. Back in those days it wasn't uncommon to have one. I do remember that Lilly was sent off to boarding school a few months after her birthday party and the next time I saw her was at her parents funeral."

"They died at the same time?"

"Yeah unfornately. They left everything to her. She hired Rosenwald Carrier, he use to be a big time attorney until he died a few years ago. With those two they invested in the community and reaped in nothing but profits. With Lilly's charm and money and Rosenwald's connections they were a powerhouse. When he died he left half of his estate to her since he said she built it. Lilly doesn't have to work another day of her life. She has hired some of the best advisors in the world."

I heard she was rich and powerful but to hear him say it brought it to life. I wondered if he knew she was a Madame?

I looked down at my watch. I had been talking to Dr. Jeffries for awhile.

"Thank you for talking to me. I really appreciate it. I have a conference call to take in a few minutes," I said standing up.

"I'm sorry I couldn't help you anymore, Cadence and welcome to the staff. If there is anything I can do for you just stop by."

"Thanks again," I said taking the pictures and putting them in my purse. I took a deep breath and headed to my meeting. There was a reason why I was meant to met Lilly. I could feel it in my bones but the question was why?
