Paul and I just finished eating breakfast when my phone rang. I looked down to see Ben calling.
"Where have you..."
"Cadence, Lilly is in the hospital. She had a heart attack last night. The doctor said she is going to be okay but she is in ICU. "
"Oh my god, what happened?"
"Just some undo stress." He said. I could hear him let out a breath.
"I am on my way."
"No, no they are just letting family see her. I'm here because she listed me as the emergency contact."
"Is her family there?" I asked. Ben paused.
"No."
"Well I am on my way. Which hospital?"
"University."
I looked at my watch. "I will be there in twenty minutes. You need to have some company. I will bring food when I come."
I looked at Paul. There was disappointment in his features. I wanted to go with him, but Lilly was alone and I know Ben was probably stressed out.
"I can't go with you," I said.
"What's wrong? Why did you change your mind?"
"Lilly had a heart attack last night and Ben is by himself at the hospital."
"I'm sure Lilly's family is there with her?" Paul said walking up to me.
"She doesn't have any there. Just Ben. She has done so much for me that I owe her. I'm sorry but I need to be there for her." I grabbed Paul's face pulled him down to me. "I'm sorry, I promise I will make it up to you."
"You don't have too. I understand. I will drop you off at the hospital."
"Thank you," I said kissing him on the lips. He deepen the kiss and he pulled away.
"We better go," he said. I noticed the bag that had my things in it he put it back in the bedroom.
He must have seen my expression on my face.
"For the next time you come to my house in the wee hours of morning looking for a friend, you will clothes here. Women clothes are expensive," he said laughing. I shook my head.
I smiled at him. Maybe I did make the wrong choice when I chose Robert.
The ride to the hospital didn't take long. The driver dropped me off and I headed inside the hospital. I followed the signs to the ICU and met Ben in the hallway. Paul and I had plenty of leftovers and I brought them with me.
"Thanks," Ben said as I handed him the bag. He looked inside and his eyes lit up.
"Grandeur took real good care of you," he said. I didn't say anything.
"How is Lilly?" I asked. "She is doing better?"
"How did this happen?"
"Just trying to take on too much," he said biting into the crossaint.
Just then an older white man came over to where we were sitting.
"Dr. Jeffries is everything okay?" ben said standing up.
"Yes, Lilly will be fine. They are about to move her to a private room in a few." Dr. Jeffries looked at me as if recognition hit.
"Are you related to Lilly? A niece or close relative?" He asked me.
"No, I work for her. Why would you ask me that?"
Dr. Jeffries replied, " you look like a younger version of Lilly. I have been knowing her since we were kids. You have the same features."
Ben looked at him and then me. Was I the butt of some sick joke? Ben stared at me which made me feel a little uncomfortable.
"Anyway she will be in room 456. You may both go in since it is only the two of you." Ben thanked him and we both walked off to the room.
"Ben, why would he say that? Lilly and I look nothing alike."
"He's just old. Don't worry about it." I could hear a change in Ben's tone. It was almost like he was convincing himself of something.
We made to Lilly's room. She was hooked up to a ventilator and heart monitor. I watched her as the lady I knew was lying flat on her back with her eyes closed. She looked peaceful but it brought back so many memories of both of my parents as I buried them both. Those were the two hardest days of my life.
Ben took the chair on the side of her and reached for her hand. I saw tears running down his masculine face as he tried to look away. I felt sorry for him. He looked to have deep affection for Lilly. I felt like I was intruding on something so I decided to give them some time.
"I need to go to the bathroom, I will be back." Ben nodded and I headed outside. I turned toward the elevator and saw Evan. He turned and looked at me. He was with three guys and a girl.
"Cadence?" He seemed confused as to why I was I the ICU.
"Evan," I said remembering the last time we were together. I couldn't tell him the real reason why I was here.
"What are you doing here? I thought you were in Atlanta?" I asked changing the subject.
"No, one of my artist tried to kill himself by taking sleeping pills. I was down here to sign off on his new record when his girlfriend found him unconscious. I wanted to talk to him and we found him laid out."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"They said he would be fine, I was just about to leave. What are you doing here?"
"My friend had a heart attack, so I came to check up on her."
"Is she okay?"
"Yeah, the doctor said she would be fine."
"Good." He said looking at me.
"Thanks again for the flowers and gift."
"You are welcome. Maybe we can have dinner tonight if you are not busy." He asked looking at me.
"Yeah, that would be nice."
"Good it's a date. I will meet you at Galatorie at eight tonight," he said. I could see his eyes light up. He gave me a hug and kiss on the cheek and he got on the elevator and left.
