When I got up this morning, I felt a sense of power. Call me crazy if you want, but I felt like something powerful almost controlling had taken over me. I had awaken as I heard the knock on the door.
"Come in," I said.
One of the maids walked in with a tray.
"Good Morning Ms. Cadence," she said smiling.
"Good morning," I said watching her put the tray on the small table. She kept smiling making me feel a little annoyed.
"Mr. Langston would like to meet with you later to go over tonight's agenda."
"Please let him know that will be fine."
"Yes Ms. Cadence," she said walking out the door. I got up and walked over to the table. When I looked down I was wearing a long white silk gown. I didn't remember changing my clothes last night. I looked in the mirror and what I saw sent a chill down my spine. The face in front of me was mine but something was different. I felt as if someone else was inside of me using me for god knows what. I moved away and sat down and ate.
After eating I showered and dressed. I looked at the time and I had a few minutes before the decorator and caterers would arrived. I went down stairs to see Gabriel.
"Good Morning Gabriel." He turned around and smiled.
"Good morning Mistress. I hope breakfast was too your liking?"
"It was very good. Thank you but you can just call me Cadence."
"It is customary to call the woman of the house Mistress as she controls what goes on in the house."
"What do you mean by that?"
"Langston and Mrs. Ashford will explain it to you. I've said enough."
"Gabriel please."
"Have you read the letter that Ms. Lilly sent you?"
"No I was on my way to get it."
"You need to read it," he said.
I walked out of the kitchen and headed to Lilly's office.
"Ms. Cadence the decorators are here," Janissa one of the housemaids said. I looked in the direction of the office and turned away. After following the decorators around telling them of our expectations and then going over the menus sampling I was exhausted.
Chateaux Dijon better known as the Algiers House would be transformed into the old southern balls of yesteryears. Who ever said that preparing for your first event was easy, they lied. Marci had called a few times, but she was having issues, tracking two of the girls and working to get a location on them. All the girls must be accounted for because they were required to attend. I told her I would handle the details at the house but it was exhausting.
"Ms. Cadence you need to be ready for tonight. Why don't I make you some tea and you go lay down? Angela and Michelle will be here in a few hours to get you ready. Why don't you take this time to refresh, we can handle any issues," Gabriel said.
"Maybe you're are right. I had a really awkward dream last night and didn't get a lot of rest. I think I will go lay down."
Before I headed upstairs I went to Lilly's office and retrieved the letter addressed to me and handed the other envelopes to Gabriel to distribute to the caterers and decorator and headed up to my room. As soon as I sat down on the bed someone was knocking on the door.
Sheesh, can a girl get some peace around here? I said more to myself. "Come in."
"I brought you some tea. It will help you relax." Gabriel poured the tea and handed it to me. The smell of blossoms radiated from the cup.
"What is this?"
"It's Passiflora. Better known as passion fruit. Langston makes it with the vines of the Maypop and other fruit stems and brew it. Drink it and I promise it will make you feel rejuvenated." I continued until I finished it. He took away the cup and tray with a smile. What was up with these people and all the smiling?
I reached over and grabbed the letter that Lilly had written. I opened it slowly as if I was opening a Christmas present. The light lavender envelope was sealed with the gold seal of LMM in french script. I peeled off the seal and two sheets of personalized stationary appeared. My hands shook a little not knowing what it would say. I slowly unfolded the sheets and read.
My Dearest Cadence,
Tonight you will embark on a transformation. Things may seem a little strange but it will guide you to the self experience you so desire.
Being Mistress is more than just meeting and greeting people, it is a glimpse into what you want and can control. The Mistress of Chateaux Dijon is the one that has absolute control of the charges that are presented to her. I have had this roll for so long that it has become a part of me, and only one other has taken my place, Marci. This is an honor and I want you to take full advantage of this opportunity.
Langston will prepare you for tonight. He will give you the tools you will need to conquer your fears but also give you the freedom to give into your darkess desires. Everything will fall into place and I know you will wear the title well.
Don't be afraid. Open your mind and let your confidence shine through. Remember you are the Mistress of Chateaux Dijon and you are in control.
See you soon,
Lilly
I read the letter over and over. I was in control of charges. Did she mean the staff? Was that why the maids and Gabriel were so nice to me? Maybe I was over thinking this. I could feel my eyes getting heavy. My body was lax as my head laid on the pillow. I looked at the ceiling as the intricate designs danced around causing my eyes to slowly close.
"Mistress Cadence it's time," I heard Langston say.
I rose up and he smiled. "The team is here to get you ready for tonight. Why don't you shower and I will bring them up in a few."
"Where is Marci? The decorators and caterers?
The house is complete and they did an awesome job. The caterers are almost complete with tonight's menu and Marci should be here in a hour."
"Okay good."
Langston stood up to walk away.
"Langston wait." He turned back to me.
"I read Ms. Lilly's letter. She said you would prepare me for tonight. What did she mean by that?"
"When the team finishes with you I will come back and explain. Now go on, the night will be here before you know it." Langston walked out and I headed to the bathroom.
I finally emerged from warm tub. The intoxicating scents of the bath oils were simply amazing! My skin was so soft and I seem to glow. My mind was clear and I felt so much power radiating through me. Maybe just reading the letter had brought me to this place. I stretched and covered myself and headed for the glam squad.
After a hour of makeup and another two with hair, Angela, Michelle and Bastian were packing up.
"Look Ms. Cadence," Bastian said pointing to the mirror. I sat up and the person that was reflected from the other side was absolutely bewitching. I turned from side to side admiring their creation. I looked like I could be on a cover of Vogue or any high fashion magazine.
My hair was pulled back with it's convoluted patterns of twists which brought out the details of my face. The Cadence from a year ago was now a woman. The scared little girl of the past was now replaced with a woman of confidence, sophistication and matureness.
"Thank you all," I said giving them each a hug. As they walked out Marci and Langston walked in.
"It is time," Marci said. She looked gorgeous in her deep green dress with the train. Her hair was pulled up and of course her makeup was flawless as usual. She walked over and pulled out my dress from the closet. She wouldn't let me see the finishing touches. I has only went to two fittings and that was it. She pulled it out the garment bag and I was shocked.
"That's for me?"
"Yes!" They both said in unison. The deep gold satin dress sparkled. The sleeveless gown was long and the bodice was made of fine lace.
Marci walked over to me and I undid my robe. Langston looked away as I put the dress on. Once it was on, Marci zipped it up. We both just stood there and watched as the dress formed to my body. Each breast fit perfectly in the lace halves as the drape from the back stopped mere inches above my backside. Langston turned his head as Marci stepped back.
Langston came around. He looked handsome and debonair in his black tuxedo with gold tie and cummerbund that matched my dress. He handed Marci a black box. He slowly opened it to reveal a yellow sapphire necklace and earrings.
"This is the yellow star sapphire. It represents hope, destiny and protection. It also calms and focuses the mind, allowing the release of mental tension and unwanted thoughts. It encourages the opening of the mind to beauty and intuition, bringing lightness and joy as it restores balance within the body. It also brings healing powers."
"They are beautiful," I said as he placed the necklace around my neck. Marci placed the earrings in my ears.
"You are Mistress Cadence tonight. Every man in that room is going to be vying for your attention. The power can be overwhelming at first but it will settle. They are your charges for tonight. They are responsible for pleasuring you."," Langston said.
"Pleasuring me?"
"Yes dear," Marci said. "You rule this compound for the night. You are the head of this kingdom. The girls are your Courtesans for tonight. They understand the position and will not take it lightly."
"Tonight is your night, Mistress Cadence," Langston bent down and bowed. "I will guide you through tonight, if you would like. This is not your ordinary ball. It is magical and I know you can feel it, because we do to."
"Yes I would like you to guide me. I've felt strange since this morning. What is happening to me?"
"Preparations. I am known as a Houngan Asogwe. A Voodoo High Priest. Don't be afraid." He said holding his hands out.
"My greatgrand mama was a Mambo, A Priestess. I learned the arts from her."
I looked at Langston through the mirror. His creole skin and dark green eyes ablaze with the unknown inhabitants of his ancestors.
The tea Gabriel gave you last night and earlier today was to relax you so you can be ready for tonight. It was just herbs and nothing else."
"What about last night? Was Amberly really in the dungeon?"
"No. Sometimes the teas can portray ones inner emotions and self. I found you in there in my office. I think I startled you and you passed out. I brought you up to your room."
"Did you undress me?"
"No, you were already dressed in the gown."
I stared at him. I could see the honesty in his eyes. I could hear his heartbeat as it was calmed.
"I believe you," I said.
"Awe, it's time." He said looking at Marci and Marci looking at me.
"You feel the power coursing through you, don't you?"
"Yes." I smoothed the dress down and took one last look in the mirror. My eyes sparkled and then I knew it was time for me to be the Mistress of Chateaux Dijon.
