I tried to kid myself into thinking telling my dad was going to be easy. Sitting on the sofa side by side. Packed in like nesting chicks. “Dad, we have to tell you something. Please just listen okay?” my dad gave us a funny look before agreeing and sitting down on the arm chair.

“Dad… I’m pregnant.”

The world didn’t end, but I was scared you were going to get killed. The look on my dad’s face is still present in my mind even now. That was the hardest member of my family to talk to. Your mum was delighted, hugging me and crying into your shirt. We showed everyone the first ultrasound picture and some asked questions. What were we going to do about money? How were we going to survive? We hadn’t really thought about it that much but we had just over eight months to talk about it now.

“I can get a job and we’ll live in my nans flat for a while. She rents it out to students sometimes and she won’t mind us staying there until we get the baby settled.” You started to eat a slice of pizza, chewing as you thought.

“I can’t think of anywhere so I guess that’s our best bet. What about baby food and clothes? A cot? It’s not cheap.” I shoved a spoonful of ben and jerry’s ice cream into my mouth. I was starting to get really worried about money, I had some money stored in my bank for the future, but I guess this baby was the future now.

“We’ll work something out baby.” You wrapped me in your arms, letting me sit in your lap like a small child. “Just don’t worry about it okay? We don’t need any stress for the baby.” You kissed the top of my head and we sat there like that for a few minutes. Breathing in each other’s scent, before turning on the TV and cuddling up to Celeb jungle.
