I saw her eyelids close. “NO! Don’t you leave me!” I spun around to the doctors. “You fucking save her! Bring her back!” the endless drone of her heart stopping on the machines. All those tubes, her blood everywhere. I fisted her wet hair, screaming. My forehead against hers. No, this couldn’t be happening. In a moment I’m going to wake up, next to Courtney. See her smile, the glow of being a mother. I’m going to make her pancakes and we’ll get to the scan fine. No car smash. All fine. But I didn’t wake up, this was not a dream. My knees fell out from underneath me, her hand still warm, grasped in mine. I cried, great body shaking sobs. Her name over and over…
That’s when the machines made a different sound. I wasn’t alone, doctors and nurses were pulling me away, and I tried to get free. Before one of the doctors grabbed my arm “her heart has started beating. Not strong but enough to try and keep her alive before it dies. You want to jeopardise every chance she has of living?” I shut up, silently dragged from the room.
