Over the next couple days, Mal gets better and we start bringing her assignments to her. She'll work on them for a while before falling asleep. Ben called right before the conference, updating Mal of when he'll be home. It's now the first day of the conference.
"Mal, you should rest some more. It's only been three days since your fall down the stairs and your concussion is still pretty bad," I insist.
She stares at her spell book like her life depends on it. "I'm not tired."
I sigh and steal the spell book from her. "You don't have to be but you need to rest; close your eyes and let your body relax."
Mal sighs and lays down. "I may not be tired but I am hungry," she says.
I nod. "I'll go grab you some food. Until then, you rest."
She nods and closes her eyes. I smile and walk out, taking the spell book with me."

When Jay walks out, I stand up. After grabbing a clipboard and a few sheets of paper, I sit back down on the bed and start writing. I write page after page, letter after letter, making sure to write one to each friend, old and new. I seal them up, place them in a shoebox, tie it shut with ribbon and shove it under my bed. My head starts to pound as I try to get rid of the headache appearing. My mind fogs over and I remember no more.

I walk back to Mal's room, carrying the mac and cheese with strawberries on the side. When I get to her room, she's walking down the hall, away from her room. "Mal?" I call. I set the food just inside the room before running and catching up to her. Her eyes glow a dark green. "Mal, what's going on?" She doesn't say anything, just keeps walking. I pick her up by her waist and carry her back to her room. I set her on her bed and tap her cheek slightly. She blinks and jolts as if waking up. "Mal, are you okay?"
She looks up at me, confused. "Jay? When did you get back?"
"I just carried you back to your room; you were walking down the hallway. It's starting, isn't it?" I ask.
She sighs and nods. "It is. Please, you can't tell the others. I just need some time to find the right counter spell. I'll figure it out."
"Mal, you should tell the others. Maybe Fairy Godmother can help!" I suggest.
"No, I don't want anyone to worry about me. It'll be okay. I want you to promise me that you won't tell anyone, especially not Ben," she begs. "Please."
"Mal-"
"Jay, even if I can't find the right counter in time, there will be nothing that he can do. I don't want him worrying and stressing over something he can't fix. You know what you need to do."
I nod and sit down beside her. "I won't let anything happen to you. Is that why you were going through your spell book."
"Yeah. There has to be something in there," Mal says.
"I will break that promise if something happens. If this goes too far, I'll tell Fairy Godmother. She's the most knowledgeable magic user around. If you can't find the answer, she will."
Mal nods. "Only if I can't figure it out. And no one else." Mal sits back in her bed, against the headboard. "I- um- I wrote letters for everyone in case- you know. I just wanted to be ready. It'll explain everything to them when the time comes. Jay, could you try to get Fairy Godmother to let you watch over me every day, instead of the rotation? I don't want them to know."
"Mal, it's nothing to be ashamed of," I remind.
She agrees. "I still don't want them worrying."
I pull out my phone and call the line for the principal. "Hello?"
"Fairy Godmother's office."
"May I speak to the headmistress please?"
I'm transferred and she picks up quickly. "Fairy Godmother speaking."
"Headmistress? This is Jay. I was hoping that Mal and I could speak with you," I tell her.
"I can be down there in a few minutes. I don't want Mal getting up," Fairy Godmother replies.
"Thank you." She hangs up and I set the phone aside. She arrives in a couple minutes.
"What's going on?" she asks.
"I was hoping you could only let Jay out of class for the next couple days," Mal starts.
Fairy Godmother seems surprised. "You don't want the others around? Why not? It doesn't seem like you."
"Evie and Carlos are the smarter ones of the group," I explain. "They can tutor us when they get done in class."
"They could probably tutor you even if they miss the class," Fairy Godmother admits. "What's going on?"
"We can't tell you," Mal says.
Fairy Godmother sighs. "Then I'm afraid I can't help you."
She starts to walk out. "Wait!" I call. I look at Mal and she shakes her head, fervently. Fairy Godmother looks at us. "We don't want them to worry about Mal. She doesn't want to tell anyone what's going on and I'm the only one who knows what to do. Please, can you just trust us?" I ask.
Fairy Godmother nods. "That I'm able to help with. I'll come up with something to tell Evie and Carlos, you just worry about Mal." I nod and look back at Mal who gives me a small smile.

Evie and Carlos come back that night, looking upset. "Fairy Godmother said we can't watch you anymore. She wants us back in class to help tutor the other students who're failing."
I look at Mal, faking confusion. "She hasn't said anything to us."
"That's because you get to stay with Mal every day. We're gonna bring your assignments to you at the start of first period," Carlos says. Dude jumps into his lap and Carlos pets him. "You're even excused from Tourney Practice now."
