This mission had taken its toll on me. After demolishing a building, killing all the mosters inside, then fighting and defeating a demon, I was exhausted.
A small team of five had come to this small town, Fritzen, on an urgent job request. A demon had set up shop in town and was terrorizing the villagers.
Now that their leader was dead, the various beasts seemed greedy for revenge. I kept my mind off my burning muscles and fatigue, running alongside Gray as we tried to shake off the hoard chasing us. I took comfort in the warmth of his hand around mine, pulling me through the streets.
"(Y/n), hang in there. The others will be here soon," His voice was steady, but clearly worried as he turned his head slightly to look at me.
I only nodded in reply. He suddenly took a sharp turn into an ally, pulling me even harder as they started to gain on us.
Gray too had taken a beating, fighting off a particularly large hoard in order to make sure I could take out the demon undisturbed. I made a mental note to thank him for that.
At the end of the ally, I saw Natsu round the corner. He shouted something I wasn't able to catch over the din coming from behind, but it seemed Gray understood.
He grabbed me by the waist, pulling me into him, then dove to the side, through the broken window of an abandoned shop. I glimpsed the fire as it shot through the ally. We landed on the dusty wood floor and I waited for the stream of monsters to come through the window. Luckily, it didn't come. It seemed that Natsu was able to hold them off.
Breathing heavily, I kept my face buried in Gray's chest, relishing in the momentary rest and the feeling of his toned chest rising and falling.
A quiet "Thank you," escaped my lips in a deep breath, and I closed my eyes for a moment.
He sighed heavily, regaining his strength and pulling us into a sitting position.
"Are you okay?" He looked over me, searching for injuries. His hand gently reached my face and he softly ran his thumb across the spot the demon's talon had caught my cheek.
"Yeah, I'm okay," I put my hands on my knees, looking down at them in embarrassment. "T'is but a flesh wound."
He chuckled, then stood up. "Come on, let's get out of here," He took my hand, pulling me to my feet. "Let's just hope the gas fire can take out the rest of those things."
I smiled, exhaling my laugh through my nose. "Yeah," I glanced at my hand still intertwined with his, blushing slightly.
(Okay I'm sorry, but I'm not the only one who gets what I'm saying with the nose exhale right? Like seriously hmu w/ a comment rn if you get what I mean.)
We stepped out of the demolished shop through the window we entered in. Down the street, Natsu seemed to have fought them back and was continuing to slaughter the hoard. We went in the other direction and quickly turned off the street. I leaned on Gray slightly for support, and we made our way back to the others.
"Are you two alright?" Erza called to us as we approached the camp we'd previously set up.
"(Y/n)'s a bit battered, and we're both drained. But I'm okay," Gray said, holding firmly onto my hand. He looked down at me, scanning me once again for any sign of injury, stopping at the gash.
"Sorry to disappoint you guys, but I'll live," I smiled alongside Erza.
"Damnit (Y/n), 'cause we were all hoping you would die," Gajeel said sarcastically as he rolled his eyes.
